By buying our wild agave syrup you are providing a sustainable source of income to these indigenous farmers helping them to stay on their land - many indigenous Mexican farmers are not able to survive on their native land and are forced to immigrate to the U.S.A. and look for work.

Our farmers in Mexico use HPLC to make chromatographic studies on sugars, monitoring closely the mineral and sugar concentrations of our agave syrups – the best available in the market.

Whereas our blue agave nectar is produced from only the Weber Azul or Blue Agave plant (Agave tequilana), which is also used to make tequila, wild agave nectars are made from up to 6 different agave species, but primarily from Agave salmiana. To produce wild agave syrup, juice is extracted naturally by the harvester sucking the liquid from the core of living agave cactus plants. Similar to how a bee creates honey, it is through enzymatic action that the complex sugars in fresh agave juice are converted into simple sugars, producing agave nectar.  The temperature in the entire process never exceeds 45 degrees Celsius. This minimal processing and minimal heat provides vitamins, minerals and enzymes in agave nectar that are not found in other processed sweeteners.

The dark agave syrup is not filtered and has the maximum amount of minerals and other phytonutrients. It has a rich vanilla-like aroma with a deep wild flavour. The light agave syrup is filtered and has a more neutral sweet flavour making it the perfect replacement for sugar in any recipe.

The main form of carbohydrate in agave syrup is a complex form of fructose called inulin or fructosan. This is absorbed slowly into the bloodstream giving it a low glycemic index and is therefore diabetic friendly. It is also the perfect sweetener for children as it does not significantly raise blood sugar levels, preventing the highs and lows associated with sugar intake and instead provides a sustained, steady source of energy.

More Information About our Agave Syrup - In Answer to Rami Nagel's & Dr Mercola's articles

There has been controversy regarding the use and promotion of Agave Syrup as a health food. Agave Nectar - The high fructose health fraud, an article written by Rami Nagel and Beware of the Agave Nectar Health Food Hype by Dr Mercola are the sources of the confusion. Both Authors have presented some valid information regarding conventionally grown and processed Blue Webber Agave. However, the information presented is not an accurate representation of Loving Earth's Agave products.

Our wild agave is a Wild Maguey (Salmiana Variety). It is wild crafted, certified organic and organically processed at low temperature. We source it from it from Loving Earth who work closely with the Indigenous association of Ixmiquilpan. They have met the growers in person and seen their operation. These growers do not produce tequila they run a small-scale operation producing only Agave Syrup. Our agave is raw - it is vacuum evaporated at 45 degrees and a certified organic, vegan enzyme is used to break down the sugars. It contains 70-75% fructose unlike the Blue Webber variety, which can have fructose levels as high as 90%. The vacuum evaporator is shown in the photo alongside.

Dr Mercola & Agave Syrup

Dr Mercola is erroneous when he states that dark agave is burnt. The light and clear varieties of Agave have undergone filtration, which is why they are lighter in colour. The Dark agave is unfiltered and richer in minerals, this results in its darker colour.Unlike high fructose corn syrup that stores its energy as starch, Agave Syrup stores its energy as Inulin, also known as Fructans or Levulose. Inulin is typically found in roots or rhizomes. There is no starch in Agave Syrup. Inulin bypasses digestion in the stomach and small intestine and is actually digested in the large intestine. Inulin actually feeds the probiotic bacteria in our digestive system.

Agave syrup is a concentrated fruit Juice. Like all sweeteners Loving Earth believes that agave should be consumed in moderation. We believe that Agave Syrup is a healthier sweetener alternative compared to cane sugar. When used respectfully Agave syrup does have health promoting properties. Overconsumption and inappropriately using Agave is what leads to health issues and puts our bodies out of balance. Agave should be used as part of a balanced diet.

Processing

Doctor Mercola states that "Agave Nectar as a final product is mostly chemically refined fructose". The sugars in our agave nectar come from the breakdown of the inulin molecule through the introduction of the certified vegan enzyme. It is in no way chemically refined, there are no chemicals involved in any part of the production or packaging process. Our growers do not use any chemicals, Ionic resins, Sulphuric/hydrochloric acid, dicalite, clarimex in the manufacturing of our Agave Syrup. Australian Certified Organic have audited the harvesting and processing of our agave syrup. They have verified that our agave syrup is pure and that no chemicals or genetically modified organisms are used. They have also verified that it is harvested sustainably. It is refined only as much as the excess moisture is removed from the juice of the plant to prevent fermentation

About the growers

In the region of Ixmiquilpan of central Mexico an indigenous group called the Hnahnu have been able to successfully commercialise agave syrup. This is a semi arid region and the main species of plant is the wild maguey (Agave salminae). In this area like many of the poorer areas of Mexico a lot of the men had gone to the US to work and there were whole villages without any men. However now that the new industry of harvesting the nectar of the wild maguey and processing it into agave syrup has been established this has created sustainable income opportunities for the local men and women.

More Information On our Agave Syrup

Natural agave has been harvested traditionally in Mexico for hundreds of years. Ranking fairly low on the glycemic load scale, a small amount of the nectar provides a larger amount of sweetness than common sugar, and thus, a little goes a long way.

The agave plant also contains saponins and fructans, phytochemicals associated with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting capabilities. (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 1996; 52:175-7).

One of these fructans is known as inulin, a natural plant sweetener with an extremely low impact on blood sugar and cholesterol levels. The ancient Aztecs even used the nectar as a healing salve for wounds. What is more, compounds derived from blue agave have been studied for their potential utility for treating colon diseases like ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease. Agave also holds high amounts of protein-building amino acids and alkaloids (Plant Foods Hum Nutr 2007; 62:133-8). Research indicates that minimally-processed agave does provide nutrients to the human body, and may even prevent chronic disease (Nutr Rev 2004; 62: 439-42).

It is also important to mention that not all agave products are created equal, and the dangerous high-fructose content cited by critics is not typical in all agave products. Roger Clemens, a professor at USC, has stated that: “Depending on how the syrup is processed, it may or may not contain more fructose.”

Comments on Dr. Mercola's Article

Dr. Mercola is mistaken as regards agave nectar. Agave’s rise in popularity is due to its quality and appeal which have led to widespread demand for it by consumers worldwide. Dr. Mercola though insinuates that agave’s success is simply the result of clever marketing, and this is far from the truth. His presentation of this article and unsubstantiated opinions is to us a real example of negative marketing as he clearly uses fear in lieu of fact to promote his agenda. Dr. Mercola appears to be leading the reader down a biased path to a negative conclusion. He has used fear tactics to propagandize against agave nectar and Madhava feels that this is outrageous and must be answered.

The following article released just last week, based on scientific research, and right in Mercola’s field as an osteopathic physician, is an example of actual research he chooses not to reveal to his readers in his attempt to bias them. He has been selective in the information he disseminates and this severely limits his credibility on the subject of agave.

Tequila Plant May Help Fight Bone Loss - Artichokes, garlic and onions also contain beneficial fructans, researchers say

An ingredient in agave - the plant used to make tequila - may help fight bone-weakening osteoporosis and other diseases, Mexican researchers say.

Agave, artichokes, garlic, onions and chicory are rich, natural sources of fructans -- nondigestible carbohydrates consisting of molecules of fructose linked together into chains, according to background information in a news release from the American Chemical Society.

"Experimental studies suggest that fructans may be beneficial in diabetes, obesity, stimulating the immune system of the body, decreasing levels of disease-causing bacteria in the intestine, relieving constipation and reducing the risk of colon cancer," Mercedes Lopez, of the National Polytechnic Institute in Guanajuato, said in the news release.

Previous research has also suggested that fructans stimulate the growth of beneficial bacteria in the large intestine in a way that increases the body's absorption of minerals, including calcium and magnesium, which are needed for bone growth.

In this study, Lopez and colleagues tested the effects of agave fructans on bone growth in mice. Compared to other mice, those fed agave fructans absorbed more calcium from food, excreted less calcium in their feces, and had a 50 percent increase in levels of a protein associated with the build-up of new bone tissue.

"These results suggest that the supplementation of the standard diet with agave fructans prevented bone loss and improved bone formation, indicating the important role of agave fructans on the maintenance of healthy bone," Lopez said. "They can be used in many products for children and infants to help prevent various diseases, and can even be used in ice cream as a sugar substitute."

But drinking tequila won't help, the study authors noted. The fructans turn into alcohol when agave is processed into tequila, they said.

Dr Mercola’s article is disheartening, because so many people rely upon Dr. Mercola for their alternative health information.

People are being led to believe that use of agave to sweeten is somehow harmful and this is not the case. There is hard evidence to the contrary, and only negative associations and suppositions to form the attack.

To address Dr Mercola’s claims:

 1. Poor Quality Control. There are very few quality controls in place to monitor the production of agave syrup. Nearly all agave sold in the U.S. comes from Mexico. Industry insiders are concerned that agave producers are using lesser, even toxic, agave plants due to a shortage of blue agave.

This is an outright fabrication.  Loving Earth routinely visit and inspect all our suppliers’ facilities in Mexico. The suppliers are Organically Certified and 3rd party audited or in the process of being so. Each has an in house laboratory for analysis and quality control. In addition our facility in Melbourne is both USDA Organic Certified & Australian Certified Organic and we are routinely inspected as well. Mercola makes it sound like these are poorly run, low budget operations in Mexico, and this could not be further from the truth. These are immaculate facilities that are conducted extremely professionally, run by highly intelligent individuals with high standards that easily meet international levels. Loving Earth and Madhava is quite fortunate to be working with such reputable companies. And, it has been well documented in newspapers both in Mexico and the US that there has been an overabundance of supply of agave plants, not a shortage in any way.  Madhava staff have personally witnessed fields left to go to seed after eight years invested due to the current surplus. Dr. Mercola fabricated his statement to shamefully suggest “toxic” plants could be used and create more unwarranted doubt. If he had facts he would not need to resort to fear.

2. Pesticides. There are also concerns that some distributors are cutting agave syrup with corn syrup - how often and to what extent is anyone’s guess. In addition, the FDA has refused shipments of agave syrup due to excessive pesticide residues.

Any concerns are due only to rumours such as this. Both our wild & our blue agave syrup is 100% pure from the agave plant with no additives whatsoever.  We would be very interested in his source of information about the FDA refusing shipments. We know without a doubt that none of our shipments have ever been refused and turned back, and know of no others that have been either. We believe Dr Mercola would post a fact or cite an example if he had one.

3. Saponins. Agave is known to contain large amounts of saponins. Saponins are toxic steroid derivatives, capable of disrupting red blood cells and producing diarrhea and vomiting. There is also a possible link between saponins and miscarriage by stimulating blood flow to the uterus, so if you’re pregnant, you should definitely avoid agave products.

This is clearly a cruel scare tactic. The fact is that saponins are in a lot of foods we eat. There are many varieties just as there are over 200 varieties of the agave plant. Most beans and legumes, soya beans, onions, paprika, alfalfa - these all contain saponins. Saponins are phytosterol compounds that occur naturally in some plants. Saponins have antimicrobial and antifungal properties, along with anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating properties. As for agave syrup, there is no evidence to cause concern, there has never been a report of agave nectar linked to a miscarriage, and there is a long history of use. From the prehispanic times, the only sweet treat available to Indians in Mexico was the cooked leaves of the agave plant. They are still in markets all over Mexico. If there would be any kind of dangerous substance, this would be the absolute extreme case of exposure to it; not a single case of any problem has ever been documented, this goes back over seven centuries.

While “some species” of the 200 identified agave species contain the toxic saponins anordin and dinordin, no research has been presented identifying these substances in the two species used for agave syrup. Nor have they been identified in agave nectar itself.

Agave Syrup in its present form has been sold for over 12 years all over the world, including western Europe, Japan and the U.S.. The product has a proven record of safety and is deemed safe by the FDA and all regulatory bodies all over the world.

4. Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Some agave syrups contain a contaminant called hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF, also called 5-hydroxymethyl furfural), an organic heat-formed compound that arises in the processing of fructose - in both agave syrup and HFCS. HMF has potential toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects[iv]. HMF is EXTREMELY toxic to honey bees, which is a problem since commercial beekeepers feed HFCS to the bees to stimulate honey production when field-gathered nectar sources are scarce[v].

Some agave is thermally processed. They can have a resulting HMF content of 5-7 milligrams per kilogram. To put this into perspective we are talking about 5 parts per million. Raw agave may be a bit higher due to longer periods of heating at the lower temperatures, but still negligible and presents no health concern. Agave produced enzymatically will be HMF free.  Loving Earth agave syrup is produced enzymatically. HMF is also commonly found to a much greater degree in wine.

 5. Nutrient Void. Agave syrup is not a whole food - it is fractionated and processed, devoid of the nutrients contained in the original, whole plant.

But, you can’t use the whole plant to sweeten your foods. There is no sweetener that is a whole food, that is the nature of them. His charge is meaningless in reference to sweeteners. Sugars are not consumed as a meal, they are ingredients and an important part of a balanced diet.

6. Enzymes. Agave syrup is not a live food. The natural enzymes are removed to prevent agave syrup from fermenting and turning into tequila in your food pantry or cabinet.

Actually, tequila is distilled so you unfortunately will not be able to produce it in your pantry. Digestion though is accomplished by enzymes, to break food down into a simple form which can easily be absorbed. Like honey, agave is already in its simple form and does not require digestion, enzymes nor exertion for our system to utilize them.

7. Addictiveness. Agave is, for all intents and purposes, highly concentrated sugar. Sugar and sweeteners wreak havoc on your health and are highly addictive.

Sugar and sweeteners are an important part of one’s diet. People enjoy them and will use them. The important message is to moderate the overall consumption of sweeteners and calories in general. In the context of a normal everyday balanced diet, Mercola’s views are not substantiated.

Response to Rami Nagel’s article - By Craig Gerbore, President of Madhava - our agave syrup is produced the same as Madhava.

In response, I must first point out that Mr. Nagel’s article is based on the view of a sole individual, Russ Bianchi. I suppose we should thank Mr. Bianchi for pointing out some issues that may have contributed to Iidea’s (the initial manufacturer of blue agave nectar) demise from the market, however I want to be clear, this is not about Madhava or our agave nectar. Once a dominant supplier, as of this past summer Iidea is no longer a major supplier in the agave syrup business. The distributors using them as a supplier have quietly switched to newly formed blue agave companies for their supply. Madhava has always worked exclusively with Nekutli, the producer of agave nectar from the agave salmiana, a very different species of the agave.

However, there is no mention of our agave nectar from salmiana in the article, nor of the differences in the plant, the collection and production of our product. So, the author has blurred the line with his all encompassing attack on blue agave nectar, by his failure to present complete information on the subject of agave nectars. For what purpose was this article written? If it were to educate the public, I think it would include all the information available. With the errors and misstatements and half-truths, I don’t think this article is about education, it is an all out shotgun attack.

I believe Mr. Bianchi, presented as the sole authority on agave nectar, was initially introduced to Iidea’s blue agave syrup product on their entry to the market in the late 90’s. At that time, Iidea was promoting a 90% fructose agave syrup. This is what I believe Mr. Bianchi is referring to. Unfortunately, he ignores the fact that this is not the agave sold on the market today, nor is it representative of Madhava’s product. In fact Mr. Bianchi has never even acknowledged the existence of our agave nectar from the salmiana variety. So, all his comments are apparently based on his experience with Iidea’s product, but I find ourselves caught in the blast.

In their zestful attack against the blue agave syrup he was introduced to initially, Mr.’s Bianchi and Nagel have also made inaccurate comments which reflect on agave nectar generally. As such, I take issue with several of their statements and claims and want to clarify some things as regards Madhava’s Agave Nectar from agave salmiana.

Their discussion of the processing of agave nectar is in no way reflective of how Madhava’s agave nectar is produced. There are three ways to convert complex sugars into a simple sugar sweetener such as agave syrup. It can be done thermally, chemically, or enzymatically as ours is. There are no chemicals whatsoever involved in the production of Madhava’s agave nectar from agave salmiana, nor is it cooked. Our agave is subject only to low temperatures during the evaporation of excess water from the juice.

The author states “The principal constituent of the agave is starch, such as what is found in corn or rice.”

This statement, which is the foundation of much of their argument comparing agave nectar to corn syrup, has no basis in scientific fact, THERE IS NO STARCH IN THE AGAVE.

How can the author and his source be so mistaken on this statement on which he bases his attack?

All plants store energy in one of two ways, as starches or fructans. All agave plants create fructans as their energy storing means.

So, agave plants have fructans, not starch. From Wikipedia: Inulins are a group of naturally occurring polysaccharides produced by many types of plants. They belong to a class of fibers know as fructans. Inulin is used by some plants as a means of storing energy and it typically found in roots or rhizomes. Most plants which synthesize and store inulin do not store other materials such as starch.

There is no starch in either species of agave, and agave nectar is not from starch as the author and Mr. Bianchi claim. They have tried very hard to propagandize the public with a false fact, either by design, or ignorance, for which there would be no excuse.

Such an error of fact certainly casts doubt on the validity of the rest of Nagel’s article, as the lack of depth of his research has to be apparent to all. Really, he is just regurgitating the singular views of Mr. Bianchi.

I personally spoke with the author during his “research”, as did at least one other in the industry. He chose not to include one word of the information given to him by us, which I will repeat below, and failed to make any distinction between Madhava’s Nekutli agave nectar from salmiana and that from the blue agave plant. He only mentions blue agave. The plants differ, the locations differ, the methods and production differ greatly. The information we gave him did not fit his purpose and so was omitted in favor of a generalized attack.

Madhava’s source is exclusively agave salmiana. If you haven’t already reviewed our site at www.madhavasagave.com , you will find background information there. Briefly though, the native people supplying the juice collect it from the live plant, by hand, twice daily. There is no heat involved in the removal. The juice is immediately brought to the facility to remove the excess water as it will ferment rapidly if left standing. It is during the removal of the moisture that the only heat is applied. The juice is evaporated and moisture removed in a vacuum evaporator. The vacuum enables the moisture to be withdrawn at low temperatures. The temp is closely controlled. Subsequently, our agave is handled and packaged at room temperatures. No other heat is applied. And, rather than convert the complex sugars of the juice thermally, we use gentle enzymatic action. Just as a bee introduces an enzyme to flower nectar to make honey, we introduce an natural organic vegan enzyme for the same purpose. The technical term for the conversion of complex sugars into their simple sugar components is hydrolysis. Inulin is a fructan which is hydrolyzed into the simple sugars composing agave nectar, fructose and glucose. Honey is composed of the same simple sugars.

The blue agave plant is harvested and the blue agave nectar is produced by a completely different method. I will have to leave it to the blue agave nectar sellers to comment on the production themselves. While I know of it, I have not witnessed it as I have Nekutli’s. Unlike the author, I won’t comment publicly on something I cannot verify.

To clarify further on another claim, “Agave Nectar as a final product is mostly chemically refined fructose”. As regards Madhava’s agave nectar, there are no chemicals involved in our production whatsoever. The sugars in our agave nectar come from the breakdown of the inulin molecule through the introduction of the enzyme to break apart that molecule. It is in no way chemically refined, there are no chemicals involved in any part of the production or packaging process. Our agave nectar is refined only in as much as the excess moisture is removed from the juice of the plant.

“HFCS is made with GM enzymes”. Bianchi’s states “they (agave and corn syrup) are indeed made the same way” This is another false assertion as regards Madhava’s agave nectar at least. Our agave nectar is certainly and clearly not made the same way as corn syrup. There is no starch in our agave. There are no chemicals, no refinement beyond the evaporation of water. And, there are no GMO’s whatsoever. The agave salmiana has never been subject to this and the enzyme is a natural, non GM organic, vegan enzyme.

Other points regarding fructose apply to sugars in general and are a consumption, or overconsumption issue. Certainly consuming large amounts of sweeteners of any kind will be detrimental to one’s health. Suggesting fructose could cause health issues when concentrated amounts are eaten is a statement which should really apply to the overconsumption issue. The information the author links to agave nectar is the result of megadose testing of pure clinical fructose. Not the same thing as normal daily use of agave nectar in the course of our meals.

The antisweetener advocates just have to admit that it is the overconsumption of sugars that is the problem. Used in moderation, sugars serve a purpose, to make other foods and beverages more palatable. Imagine a world without sweeteners if you can. Affinity for sweet taste is a human trait that most want to satisfy. For those who use sweeteners, there are limited choices available and many choose agave for its particular attributes. It is a good choice. Madhava Agave’s neutral flavor suits the purpose. It is in fact low glycemic, organically certified and non allergenic. Many with diabetes and other special diets find it suitable for their use where other sweeteners are not. It’s easy to use and you can use less.

While it remains up to the individual to maintain balance in their diet and monitor their overall consumption of sweets, Nekutli/Madhava’s Agave Nectar does have advantages over other sweeteners and that is why it has become so popular and received so much attention today.

I think the information I have brought to light here clearly contradicts the claims contained in Rami Nagel’s article. Thank you for your consideration.

Dr. Weil on Agave Nectar

Question: Is Agave Nectar Any Good?
Have you ever used agave nectar instead of honey? I recently discovered it in our health food store. It has a lower glycemic index than honey and works just as well. I have used it in place of honey in your recipes.

Answer: Agave (pronounced 'uh-GAH-vay') nectar is produced from several species of agave, desert plants native to the Americas, known as "maguey" in Mexico. (The blue maguey is used to make both tequila and mescal.) Not surprisingly, agave is an important crop in Mexico. Just before they send up their huge flower stalks, these plants store a lot of energy in their cores in the form of a sweet-tasting carbohydrate called inulin. Agave nectar is produced by expressing the juice from the agave core, then filtering and heating it and treating it with enzymes to convert the inulin to sugars.

As you’ve noted, agave nectar is a natural sweetener that ranks relatively low on the glycemic load scale. It is sold in health food stores and online and has been growing in popularity in recent years. Although it provides as many calories as sucrose (table sugar), it is sweeter, so you can use less of it - say one-quarter of a cup to substitute for one cup of sugar in recipes. I like the taste of agave nectar and have started using it in my kitchen, as well as trying products that contain it.

A 2006 review of the scientific literature on agave published in HerbClip™, on the Web site of the American Botanical Council, concluded that it is safe to use agave in the amounts usually found in foods and beverages, but the reviewers cautioned that pregnant women should avoid it because some species (more than 200 have been identified) contain anordin and dinordin, steroids with contraceptive effects that could lead to miscarriage. I think this is a very low risk. I am more concerned about the sustainability of agave as a food source, because demand may soon exceed supply.

Andrew Weil, M.D.  http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA400431/Is-Agave-Nectar-Any-Good.html

Note: While “some species” of the 200 identified contain anordin and dinordin according to the report, no research has been presented identifying these substances in the two species used for agave syrup. Nor have they been identified in agave syrup itself.

Agave Syrup - Blue Raw Planet Organic & Raw Amber in a glass bottle - Mexico

  • Description
  • More Details

Agave Nectar has been used for centuries as a flavouring though native populations have also been aware of its health benefits and used it medicinally. The Aztecs used a mixture of agave nectar and salt as a dressing for wounds and a balm for skin infections and agave's use as a folk remedy persists today.

Scientific studies have confirmed agave's remedial properties. Agave nectar applied to the skin has been found effective against pyogenic (pus producing) bacteria such as Staph aureus. The tradition of adding salt to the nectar has been found to further boost its anti-microbial property. Agave nectar has also been proven effective against enteric (intestinal) bacteria.

Organic Blue Agave nectars are species-specific made exclusively from Central Mexico's renowned Blue Agave plant. Blue agave (Agave tequilana var. Weber) a member of the Amaryllis family is a slow-growing plant that spreads runners from a 'mother' plant. Grown to USDA Organic Standards the agave is cultivated and processed without chemicals or genetic modification.

After growing for 5 to 7 years a mature blue agave stands several feet tall and its carbohydrates are concentrated in the plant's core. The blue agave's treasure is held in the pina (so called because it resembles a pineapple after the leaves have been trimmed away).

Farmers hand-cut the blue agave with a simple razor-sharp blade. (A skilled farmer can cut and trim a 100- pound blue agave pina in less than 5 minutes.) The field trimmings are left behind to restore the soil and reduce erosion.

The fibrous blue agave pina is taken to the mill where it is pressed and its inulin-rich juice is collected and cleaned.

Inulin a dietary fiber made up of complex carbohydrates is not sweet by nature. Exposing (or hydrolyzing) the inulin to heat transforms it into sweet nectar. When making the Light Blue Agave nectar the juice is heated to a higher temperature for a short time. However when making the Raw Blue Agave nectar the process is lower and much slower: the juice is warmed to a lower temperature and the low heat is maintained for nearly twice as long. In this simple process the inulin becomes fructose a slowly metabolizing sugar found in many fruits and vegetables. Filtering determines the blue agave nectars' flavour and colour. This amber syrup is unfiltered.

Baobab Fruit Powder - Raw Planet - Organic

  • Description
  • More Details
Baobab fruit powder forms naturally inside the hard-shelled fruit of the African baobab tree: Adamsonia Digitata L. The powder is pale in colour and has a unique tangy taste described as "caramel pear with subtle undertones of grapefruit." Baobab offers opportunities for improvements in the overall nutritional profile of products.

The iconic Baobab tree – also known as the “upside-down tree” and “The Tree of Life” – is abundant in the southern African bush. Indigenous peoples have eaten its fruit for centuries for its many nutritional properties. It contains over six times more Vitamin C than oranges and twice as much calcium as milk. It is also high in anti-oxidants, iron and potassium and was traditionally used by sailors to stave off scurvy.

Baobab ORAC Value

The Baobab ORAC Value is 24,000 u mol TE/100g which is just slightly more than dried Goji Berries at 23,000 umol TE/100g.

Baobab Fruit

Inside the hard shell are seeds, which are coated with whitish powder, which is the fruit pulp. The white globules seen in the following photograph are the pulp with a dark seed inside. The globules are surrounded by red fibers, whcih are very high in certain nutrients.

Baobab products are produced by mechanically separating the seeds and red fibers from the baobab fruit pulp. The dried baobab fruit pulp, which is what we are selling, is used as a nutritional supplement .

The seed or seed and red fibers are used to make an extract oil, which is very good for dry skin.

The accompanying photograph shows baobab powder, a seed, a globule of pulp and a seed, and red fibers. Note that the pulp is
dried naturally on the tree, resulting a ready to consume powder containing typically 8-12 % water.

Serving Suggestions: The powder is easily soluble in water. It has an acidic, almost citrusy taste.

Just add a spoonful to your favourite raw desserts, bars or smoothies.

Like lucuma, it can also be used as a non-dairy creamer giving 'mouth feel' for 'hot' chocolate and other recipes.

Bee Pollen Granules - Raw Planet - Organic

  • Description
  • More Details

Professor Nicolai Tsitsin, a biologist and experimental botanist of the Longevity Institute of the former USSR, studied centenarians in the Caucasus mountains of Georgia and discovered many Georgians living past 100 years and up to 150 years were beekeepers who eat raw, unprocessed honey with high concentrations of pollen. He attributed this longevity to the action of pollen, and concluded that, taken regularly, pollen will prolong the human lifespan considerably.

Now, pollen is eaten by millions of health-conscious people worldwide. Many international and Olympic athletes from all over the world also eat pollen.

What is pollen? Pollen is the male element of flowers. It has enormous nutritive and medicinal properties and forms the ovules, the starting point of the production of fruits, grains, legumes and vegetables. Bees gather pollens which are mixed with nectar to make pellets that are carried into the beehive. A teaspoonful contains approximately 1,200 pellets, each pellet containing 20 billion grains of pollen, each capable of fertilising and creating a fruit, a vegetable, a flower, or a stalk of grain. Pollen is a very nutritionally complete food and has the potential to contribute as a major food source for humans.

Flower pollen possesses 185 known nutritional ingredients, including twenty-two amino acids (and more of all the eight essential ones by weight than the traditional high protein foods), twenty-seven minerals, the full range of known vitamins, plus enzymes, carbohydrates, fats, and plant growth hormones and other trace substances not yet identified.

Medical studies have shown the following benefits of pollen:

- Allergies: Pollen has an ability to immunize the body against anemophile (wind and air blown) pollens and relieves allergic symptoms.

- Anaemia: Pollen has been shown in studies to provoke a rapid increase in blood haemoglobin.

- Cancer: A US Department of Agriculture research project concluded that pollen is useful as a cancer preventative and restrictor of tumour development.

- Chelation: Pollen allows more oxygen to reach the body and brain cells by acting as an atherosclerotic flushing agent (a chelator).

- Stamina and Vitality: were increased for those using pollen on a regular basis.

- Convalescence: Pollen brings about a rapid increase in weight and energy during convalescence.
Intestinal: Pollen shows a regulatory action on intestinal functions - both on constipation as well as in cases of diarrhoea resistant to antibiotics.

- Menstruation: Pollen has been shown to bring relief in cases of painful and irregular menstruation.
Radiation: Laboratory animals exposed to high doses of radiation have been shown to have been protected by including pollen in their diet.

- Relaxation: Pollen produces a calming, tranquillising, and sedating effect without any side effects.

- Wound-healing: Pollen has been shown to increase the rate of healing, reduce scarring and prevent infection.

The United States Department of Agriculture (1992) tested and compared Bee Pollen with other fruit and vegetables and found that Bee Pollen, on a per calorie basis:

- has twice as much iron as any other common food type. Iron is essential for the effective flow of oxygen throughout the body. Bee Pollen contains over seven times more iron than beef.

- is higher in protein than most high-protein foods. Bee Pollen contains up to 50% more muscle-building protein than beef does

- is a valuable source of calcium. Strong bone development depends on high levels of dietary calcium. Bee Pollen contains twice as much calcium as milk.

- contains the strong antioxidant vitamins A (beta carotene), C and E, and was found to contain higher levels of beta carotene than all common foods except tomatoes.

- is an excellent source of three B Vitamins: Thiamin, Riboflavin and Niacin.

Bee Pollen has the highest natural level of folic acid (folate) of any common food, which may support the prostate gland and cell regeneration. It also contains natural antioxidants, of which the flavonoid quercetin is useful for helping the body’s natural response to allergens. Bee Pollen has also been shown to assist with energy levels, stamina, and athletic performance.

Pollen is becoming popular for curing cases of acne, obesity, lost appetite, weakness, loss of weight, intestinal disorders, psychosis, neurasthenia, retarded growth, cerebral haemorrhage, memory loss, general debility, minimal brain dysfunction in children, convalescence, and general malaise.

A study comparing so-called activated bee pollen (cracked-shell pollen) and natural pollen, which our bee pollen is, showed there was no significant difference in terms of the bioavailability of a number of key components (Lister 1999)

Our pollen is export quality and harvested from native flowers in the pristine forests of the South Island of nuclear-free New Zealand and dried slowly at low temperature to preserve all the goodness of the pollen. It is the best available!

The pollen is not certified organic as you cannot confine the bees to one particular area but is as organic as they can be. The bee keepers are third generation bee keepers with their fathers still involved helping them in their family business. They have a very strict high standard they adhere to and only bee pollen is processed on-site in an extremely clean environment.

Cacao

  • Description
  • More Details
Ancient cultures knew that certain foods were difficult if not impossible to digest in their completely raw and natural state and so implemented methods like fermentation in order to break these foods down so that they were able to digest them easily and obtain their nutrients.  This is exactly the case with raw cacao beans.

Please buy below

Fermentation
Fermentation is a process that is highly beneficial to any food in increasing the enzyme activity of that food and increasing the nutrient availability.

Cacao beans, still covered with pulp, are placed in large, shallow wooden boxes or are left in piles and covered with banana leaves to start their fermentation process.

Once extracted from the pod-like fruit, purified water is then used to cleanse the beans. These whole beans are unpeeled and do not contain sugar or any other additives. They are then dried at low temperature and packed.

Cacao beans though called a bean are actually the seed pod of a fruit, eg, a nut, and, if unfermented, can be difficult for the human digestive system to break down due to the beans having a high phytic acid level which inhibits the uptake of alkaline minerals such as magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc.

Phytic acid not only holds on to or chelates important minerals, but also inhibits enzymes that we need to digest our food.

Fermentation activates enzymes in the beans so the cacao beans are activated similar to the activated nuts that we supply.

Fermentation improves digestibility of the beans and increases nutrient availability while also reducing bitterness.

Fermentation does however lead to loss of antioxidants & anandamides so Loving Earth cacao beans are lightly fermented which renders them higher in health promoting antioxidant nutrients than fully fermented beans.

Association of cacao producers of Satipo

Satipo is a region that sits at the edge of Amazon basin at the base of the Andes mountain range. In this area Loving Earth works with 4 small producer groups that are grouped under the umbrella association of cacao producers of Satipo that consists of 164 families in total. This association is certified organic by Control Union and is a member of the Fair Trade Association.  This ensures the cacao is certified organic and fairly traded. Each family has approximately 2 hectares of criollo cacao and coffee bushes grown in the understory of larger trees - mainly coconut and other forest trees. The cacao of this region is known locally as the queen of cacao due to its fine aroma and distinctive flavour that is typical of South American criollos. With the increasing demand for this quality organic cacao the association has been steadily growing by introducing more producers to the organic farming methods and post harvest processing techniques. The association has set up a facility where they can process the cacao beans into cacao liquor and then cold press the liquor into powder and butter. This has taken some local ingenuity as cacao presses are normally heated to 80ºC so that they can operate efficiently. Cold pressing the cacao is a more laborious process and the cacao powder is left with a higher percentage of butter than the conventionally processed cacao. However as you have probably experienced the end product is vastly superior both in flavour and nutritional content. Due to this unique and high quality finished product the producers are able to charge a significantly higher price for their product than the standard fair trade cacao price.

Theobroma Cacao - Food of the Gods

  • More Details
What is Cacao?

Cacao is the seed of a fruit of an Amazonian tree that was brought to Central America during or before the time of the Olmecs. Cacao beans were so revered by the Mayans and Aztecs that they used them as money!

In 1753 Carl von Linnaeus, the 18th-century Swedish scientist, thought that cacao was so important that he named the genus and species of this tree himself. He named this tree: Theobroma cacao, which literally means "cacao, the food of the gods."

The following quote from the "Historia General y Natural de las Indias" (General History and Nature of the Indies) by Fernàndez de Oviedo (1535) describes where cacao originally came from according to Mayan myhthology "Cocoa was more than a simple food. It was a divine food. Quetzalcoalt, the sacred king of the Toltechi, high priest and king of Tula, was the gardener of paradise where the first men lived. From there, he brought the cacahuaquehitl or cacaotero to his country."

"The True History of Chocolate"

This is the title of a book written by Coe and Coe. The authors a husband and wife team, both Harvard academics, intended to document the definitive history of chocolate in this book (as there are many versions of the history of chocolate). Michael Coe a meso-american expert finished the book after his wife Sophie died of cancer while working on the book. For Sophie the history of chocolate was her passion and she spent hundreds of hours tracking down centuries-old manuscripts in the libraries of Europe and North America.

cacao producing regions in MesoamericaThe Coe's refer to the pre-mayan culture of Olmecs, particularly the group based in Izapa in Xoconusco (Soconusco), Mexico as the place where the criollo variety of cacao was originally domesticated by this culture sometime between 400 B.C. and A.D.100. There are still small pockets of these original heirloom varieties of criollo cacao in semi-abondoned plantations around the ruins of Izapa, just outside Tapachula in Xoconusco. The region of Xoconusco and the cacao grown there was so prominent in their account of the true history of Chocolate that the coe's referred to it as "the diamond in the crown of the Aztec empire". The map shows the boundaries of the Aztec empire and the major cacao growing regions of the time just before the spanish conquest. You will notice the Aztecs conquered the small region of Soconusco even though it was far removed from the main part of their territory, just to be able to control the prized cacao grown in the region.

Loving Earth is currently working on a project with the Mayan Network of Organic Organizations in Mexico to restore this original variety of criollo cacao and the traditional system of Permaculture that the Mayans and the Olmecs before them used to cultivate this cacao. The raw cacao beans and nibs that we sell here are from Xoconusco and are the fruits of this project.

Cacao and Traditional Mesoamerican Life

Cacao was considered sacred by the mayans and was the major offering in most of their ceremonies. Even though the cacao bean was central to Mesoamerican life, only the very wealthy and powerful could afford to use it. The Mayan and Aztec priests and royalty drank copious amounts of a drink made from the fermented and crushed cacao seeds. This drink was called xocoatl or "bitter water" in Nahua. Later in Europe xocoatl became "chocolate." Xocoatl was used for ceremonies and religious observances. Priests used it as a part of their prayer offerings. Kings drank it for breakfast. Marriage vows were sealed by drinking xocoatl. It was a major part of every feast. During the 15th century, Nezahualcoyotl's court in Texcoco is recorded as consuming "four xipuipillis" or 32,000 beans each day. In the market place, the beans were accepted as standard currency. On market day, three beans would purchase a turkey egg, 100 beans a slave or a dugout canoe, 65-300 beans a cotton mantle. Cacao beans continued to be used as standard currency until 1887 in Mexico. The cacao of Xoconusco was considered the finest, best quality cacao by the aztec royalty and the largest annual taxes of cacao were collected from this region.

Cacao Beans, Butter, Liquor, Nibs, Powder, Raw Chocolate Bars & Chocolate Coconut Butter

The raw cacao bean is one of nature's most fantastic superfoods due to its wide array of unique properties, many of which are destroyed or corrupted by cooking.

"People always ask me what I eat. Raw, organic Cacao Beans are the primary food in my diet. They have inspired me to eat less and live more. Cacao Beans are truly the food of the gods, the best food ever!" - David Wolfe, co-author of 'Naked Chocolate' book.  Please go below to buy.

Cacao beans contain no sugar and between 12% and 50% fat depending on variety and growth conditions. There is no evidence to implicate cacao bean consumption with obesity.

Magnesium

Cacao is remarkably rich in magnesium.  Cacao seems to be the #1 source of magnesium of any food. This is likely the primary reason women crave chocolate during the menstrual period. Magnesium balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, and is associated with more happiness. Magnesium is the most deficient major mineral on the Standard American Diet (SAD); over 80% of Americans are chronically deficient in Magnesium!

Stimulant or Superfood?

Cacao contains subtle amounts of caffeine and theobromine. However, experiments have shown that these stimulants are far different when consumed raw than cooked.

Consider the following: Experimental provings of chocolate by homeopaths indicate its stimulating effect when cooked. One experiment conducted with a decoction of roasted ground cacao beans in boiling water produced an excitement of the nervous system similar to that caused by black coffee, an excited state of circulation, and an accelerated pulse. interestingly, when the same decoction was made with raw, unroasted beans neither effect was noticeable, leading the provers to conclude that the physiological changes were caused by aromatic substances released during roasting.

MAO Inhibitors

Cacao seems to diminish appetite, probably due to its monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors (MAO inhibitors) - these are different from digestive enzyme inhibitors found in most nuts and seeds. These rare MAO inhibitors actually produce favorable results when consumed by allowing more serotonin and other neurotransmitters to circulate in the brain. According to Dr. Gabriel Cousens, MAO inhibitors facilitate youthening and rejuvenation.

Phenylethylamine (PEA)

Phenylethylamine (PEA) is found in chocolate. PEA is an adrenal-related chemical that is also created within the brain and released when we are in love. This is one of the reasons why love and chocolate have a deep correlation. PEA also plays a role in increasing focus and alertness.

Anandamide (The Bliss Chemical)

A neurotransmitter called anandamide, has been isolated in cacao. Anandamide is also produced naturally in the brain. Anandamide is known as "The Bliss Chemical" because it is released while we are feeling great. Cacao contains enzyme inhibitors that decrease our bodies' ability to breakdown anandamide. This means that natural anandamide and/or cacao anandamide may stick around longer, making us feel good longer, when we eat cacao.

Allergies?

A recent study showed that only one out of 500 people who thought they were allergic to chocolate actually tested positive. Allergies to chocolate are quite rare. It is typically the case that the person is in fact allergic to milk and dairy products.

Cacao & Antioxidants

Raw cacao is very high in antioxidants.  Its ORAC rating is 621 - compare that to blueberries at about 32!

These are raw whole unpeeled and unfermented cacao beans - mixed size.

They are grown organically but uncertified as the cost of certification is too expensive for the growers.

Many whole cacao beans on the market today including our Loving Earth beans are fermented to make it easier to separate the cacao beans from the pulp and also to increase assimilation of minerals such as calcium & magnesium. This fermentation process does however result in some loss of antioxidants and anandamides.

These beans are unfermented so you can enjoy the fullest amount of antioxidants & anandamides.

You can easily ferment these beans yourself if you wish.

Cacao Butter - Loving Earth - Organic & Raw - Peru

  • Description
  • More Details

Our Cacao Butter is the raw, certified organic, chemical-free extract from raw cacao beans - the pure oil of the cacao bean.

White chocolate is made from cacao butter.

Our Cacao Butter is created through a proprietary cold-pressed method. This process begins by cold-pressing raw, organic Cacao Nibs into a "cake" in such a way that the oil begins to separate from the protein and fiber. The temperature is never allowed to exceed (or even reach) 120 degrees Fahrenheit and is usually 104 degrees Fahrenheit (all other cocoa butters are exposed to temperatures as high as 300 degrees Fahrenheit!). A high-accuracy thermometer is used throughout processing. Slowly, the pure, liquid cacao butter begins to sift off into a stainless steel valve that takes the cacao butter into a separate container where it is allowed to solidify and then packaged for shipment!

It takes approximately 2.5 to 3 kgs of raw cacao nibs/beans to create 1 kg of raw Cacao Butter.

Cacao Butter is the most prized oil known.

Cacao Powder - Loving Earth - Organic & Raw - Peru 300g

  • Description
  • More Details

The raw chocolate revolution is in full swing!

We are extremely happy to present you with New Zealand's first raw cacao powder that's been organically certified.  As the market has grown, the Peruvian producer has been able to invest in new machinery and more people. Because of this, he's just perfected a technique that makes truly raw organic cacao powder. This means that you can now create the world's healthiest organic raw chocolate treats easier and cheaper than before. Oh, the decadence of it...

What is Raw Cacao Powder (Chocolate Powder)?

It's created by cold-pressing our cacao beans into a cake separating the oil from the protein and fibre. The temperature is never allowed to exceed 47 degrees Celsius and is usually 40 degrees Celsius (all other cocoa powders are exposed to temperatures as high as 150 degrees Celcius!). A high-accuracy thermometer monitors the process. Slowly, the pure, liquid cacao butter begins to sift off down a stainless steel valve. The remaining dry 'cake-like' material is then cold-ground, fine-milled and sifted so that only the finest, most bio-available raw cacao particles filter through into the finished product. This allows for maximum digestion and antioxidant absorption. It has a delightful, full, antioxidant-rich chocolate flavour.

This unique technique uses absolutely no chemicals, no hexane, no solvents.

The Amazing Story of Raw Cacao Powder

ORAC antioxidant laboratory analysis confirms that there are over 25,200 ORAC units in a single spoonful of Raw Cacao Powder!

This delicious, easy-to-use and mega-potent (955 ORAC units per gram!) form of chocolate has broken a world record. Never before has there been 25,200 ORAC units of antioxidant power in a spoonful of anything.

Dark chocolate has been touted as a source of antioxidants, but this raw cacao powder is way beyond that. Living proof that raw is better!

Why Antioxidants?

Antioxidants keep you looking young, they help fight disease, and they do all these things, too:

* Italian researchers found eating 100 grams of dark chocolate each day for 15 days lowered blood pressure in the 15-person study. The University of L'Aquila team also found the body's ability to metabolise sugar -- a problem for people with diabetes -- was improved. Because the effect was believed to be due to antioxidant levels, with Raw Cacao Powder we can likely multiply this effect.

* Dutch researchers indicate that dark chocolate contains four times the amount of catechin antioxidants than black tea, which is suspected of having a protective effect against heart disease and possibly cancer due to its antioxidant properties. With Raw Cacao Powder, it would be 28 times more than Black Tea and potentially 7 times the protection!

* In trials, doctors at Harvard found that Antioxidant compounds called Flavonols in chocolate help the body to produce nitric oxide, a compound essential for proper heart function. (Nitric oxide is also believed by pro bodybuilders to help increase muscularity.) Again, with Raw Cacao Powder, this effect could easily be multiplied.

Raw cacao powder contains about seven times as many antioxidants as cooked cacao powder, that's about 723% more!

Concentrated Nutrients

Because it's concentrated, raw cacao powder has at least 33% more of many of cacao's most vital nutrients! In Raw Cacao Powder, much of the oil is removed, while nearly all of the active nutrients remain. For example...

* The amino acid Tryptophan is found naturally in cacao. Tryptophan enhances relaxation and promotes better sleep. Now you'll get at least 33% more when you use Raw Cacao Powder!

* Researchers have discovered that phenylethylamine (PEA) has a positive effect in enhancing feelings of love. And Chocolate has been proven to be an excellent source of PEA. Now you can love at least 33% more with Raw Cacao Powder!

* Cacao is the richest food source of magnesium of any common food. Magnesium is the number one mineral that assists and supports healthy heart functioning. Now you get at least 33% more magnesium gram-per-gram with Raw Cacao Powder!

* Raw Cacao Powder has at least 33% more Arginine, the aphrodisiac-like amino acid believed by body builders to build muscle and aid in recovery.

* And much, much more!

We could talk forever about the qualities of raw chocolate, but that's what their book Naked Chocolate book is all about!

How To Use Raw Cacao Powder
Here are just a few ideas for using your Raw Cacao Powder. You can:
* Add it to your favorite smoothies (one heaping tablespoon will do) and watch them instantly become Raw Chocolate masterpieces!
* You can blend it with raw coconut oil and agave nectar - for instant raw chocolate syrup! (Then put this on top of raw ice cream or fresh fruit - AMAZING!)
* You can blend it in a food processor with raw nut butters and agave nectar, for the most delicious desert you've ever had. (In fact, similar nut butters mixed with roasted cocoa powder are very expensive in health food stores.)
* You can make any cookie, brownie or pie more chocolatey and delicious - just add a tablespoon or more to taste.
* You can blend it with sweet almond milk. This gives you a creamy dark chocolate milk that's LOADED with antioxidant power and tastes out of this world!

Storage
Please refrigerate or store in a cool, dry place (out of direct sunlight) if you can, though it's not essential. This product is microbe-free and highly-stable.

Check out our Raw Cacao Powder
In the book Naked Chocolate they mentioned the amazing story of the Kuna Indians, who live on the San Blas Islands of Panama. These people have always had extremely low blood pressure and that it did not climb as they got older. In fact, they always remained in remarkably great health.

When the lifestyles of these people were studied, one thing stuck out. The Kuna living on the islands drank a significant amount of locally grown, minimally processed, high-flavonol cocoa.

The best part: for the first time ever, YOU can do the exact same thing. You get to drink and eat this simple, yet powerful food - very likely the most potent source of health-promoting antioxidants in existence.

How it's processed

First of all, the cacao pods are harvested from the trees and cracked open. The beans are then taken out and fermented. The level of fermentation affects the flavour; we do a low fermentation of about 45 degrees C, as otherwise the temperatures can get quite high, which affects the structure of the nutrients. The main thing that Loving Earth does differently to other chocolate makers is that we don't roast the raw cacao beans before we process them. The standard procedure in the chocolate industry is to roast the raw cacao, which helps bring out the flavour. It removes a lot of the microbiological contamination they might contain, but it also removes some of the valuable antioxidants contained within. What we do instead is wash them with a citric-based organic disinfectant. Afterwards, they're dried in large commercial dehydrators, at controlled temperatures, before being winnowed into nibs, which basically means taking the skin off them. Then we grind them into liquor, and finally we press them into powder and butter.

Basically, we get five products from this process. We get raw cacao beans, and because we've disinfected and washed them you can eat them - raw! We get raw cacao nibs, which are the beans without the skin. We get raw cacao liquor, which is the nibs ground into a paste. Then when we take the the liquor and put it into a very high-pressure press, which presses all the fat and butter out of it. So the end product is the raw cacao butter and then this hard cake that's milled into raw cacao powder. 1kg of liquor is about 50% fat, so when you press the liquor you get about 40% cacao butter and 60% powder. The powder retains about 10% fat content after pressing, and all the antioxidants plus a lot of the nutrients are concentrated in that powder.

We buy and import these five products, which we use to make our raw chocolate from scratch. When indigenous communities such as our friends in Peru manage to add as much value as possible at the point of origin, not only do we support agricultural industry, but also the development of that community. We get the five basic materials we need to make our chocolate, and they earn more, allowing them to further develop infrastructure to process their cacao.

How it's packaged

Every Loving Earth chocolate bar comes to you in a plant-based inner wrapper to maximise freshness and extend shelf life. These wrappers are not made of plastic, so please recycle them!

The boxes which contain our wrapped chocolate bars are made from 80% recycled post-consumer cardboard and are printed with vegetable inks.

Creamy Coconut Mylk Chocolate Bars Sweetened with Coconut Nectar - Loving Earth - 30g and 80g bars

  • Description
  • More Details
This Creamy Coconut Mylk Chocolate is made with Amazonico Criollo, Certified Organic Raw Cacao (47%) from Satipo, Peru, Organic Coconut and sweetened with Organic Evaporated Coconut Nectar.

This is the ultimate creamy raw chocolate experience! Our Creamy Coconut Mylk Chocolate captures the flavour and smoothness of milk chocolate, without using any dairy.

Now available in 30g and 80g sizes
What is it?

It’s surprising to note that this chocolate bar is the result of only two plants – the coconut palm tree and cacao. Keeping the ingredients simple and close to their natural state is key to the unique quality of our chocolate.

We’ve always believed that Coconut and Cacao is the perfect marriage – the creaminess of the coconut compliments the rich flavours of cacao beautifully. We’ve played with the subtle balance of this pair to create a new flavour, lighter in cacao content compared to our popular Coconut Mylk Chocolate, one which we could only describe as ‘creamy’!

Luvju represents the gold standard in Organic Superfoods.

Our three Superfood Luvju Bars combine the ultimate in vitamin C, purple antioxidant and green superfoods with a carefully selected blend of fruits, nuts and cacao. Orange Luvju combines gubinge and camu camu with apricots, coconut and almonds in a zesty synergy of revitalisation. Purple Luvju amalgamates maqui berry powder and acai with cashews, white mulberries, sour cherries and cacao to craft a juicy explosion of energising antioxidant goodness. Green Luvju blends AFA with figs, almonds, goji berries, chia and brasil nut powder to create a protein-rich, brain-stimulating burst of tasty complexity.

Since we wanted to invest all aspects of Luvju with meaning, the packaging we’ve created is based around the classic heart symbol, formed by placing two of our drop-shaped logos together. We worked for a long time to get the first compostable metalised film that’s just become available in Europe. We’ve had it laminated to a paper finish on the outside, so it’s actually 96% plant-based recyclable material, and then designed a beautiful box that it all goes in with an inventive little dispenser printed on recycled board with vegetable inks. The artwork has also had a lot of time put into it, with a unique design on the front of each box incorporating totems which reflect the spirit of each of the flavours.

Camu Camu Extract Powder - Raw Planet - Organic

  • Description
  • More Details
Our Camu Camu is 100% pure Certified Organic, different to the previous product we were selling in that it now contains no manioc root powder. We’re happy to report that our Camu Camu is no longer spray dried, and is now 100% organic Camu Camu pulp, dehydrated at low temperatures. This results in a Vitamin C percentage of over 12%: that’s 30 to 60 times more Vitamin C than an orange. What’s more, since our Camu Camu is a whole food in its full-spectrum natural form, your body can absorb the nutrients contained within much more effectively than it will absorb any synthetic supplement.

Camu Camu (Mycaria Dubia) is a bushy tree that grows in black water rivers, especially along abandoned watercourses known as cochas. Each year, the river floods, bringing nutrients to the soil and avoiding the depletion associated with typical farming methods; these are ecosystems of great social and economic importance to the Amazon jungle in Peru. Growing in these swampy areas, it takes years for the tree to become mature enough to bear fruit. The fruit of the tree is approximately 2 cms in diameter and has a purplish red skin with a yellow pulp.

Camu Camu is traditionally made into a juice by people of the rainforest to support the immune system, ward off viral infections, and help maintain optimal health, especially under conditions of stress and anxiety, which tend to deplete the immune system. It also contains bioflavonoids, the amino acids serine, valine, and leucine, plus considerable quantities of thiamine, riboflavin and niacin. Camu Camu helps to promote healthy gums, eyes, and skin and supports the functions of the brain (nervous system) and heart (circulatory system).

Traditionally, native medicine practitioners and herbalists have recommended Camu Camu for:

  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Improving symptoms of herpes infections, including mouth blisters, genital blisters, shingles blisters and other viral infections
  • Promoting energy and vitality of people with chronic immune dysfunction
  • Strengthening the nervous system
  • Supporting healthy levels of white blood cell formation
  • Detoxifying the body, especially the liver
  • Promoting health of upper respiratory organs, including lungs, sinuses, nasal passages
  • Promoting a healthy heart and circulatory system

Pharmacological Information

The Camu Camu fruit has a surprising range of medicinal effects. In joint studies with IIAP, Sandoval (2000) of Albany University has demonstrated that Camu Camu flesh has a great antioxidant power, and it inhibits the radical DPPH (1,1-diphenil-2-picrilhydrazil), surpassing that of ascorbic acid and trolox (water soluble analog of vitamin C).

Some of the extraordinary medicinal properties of this Amazon rain forest fruit are described by Gary Null, Ph.D., a nationally known nutritionist and researcher. In discussing the holistic treatment of depression he lists 19 plants containing chemical compounds with antidepressant properties. In order of potency, Camu Camu is listed second in effectiveness. Some have been able to gradually wean themselves off of their anti-depression prescription medication (such as Zoloft and Prozac) under medical supervision and substitute Camu Camu powder with no relapse into depression. Although the amount taken varies for different people, some have taken, on an empty stomach, 1/2 teaspoon of Camu Camu powder in a glass of water four times daily. Others have taken one tsp. either once or twice daily. One alternative health care provider in New York City has had twenty patients on Zoloft and Prozac gradually wean themselves off these medications while taking camu camu and they have succeeded in avoiding depression. Good results have also been noted for patients who are anxious, talkative, and those with panic attacks.

Camu Camu has been part of an effective protocol for a 14 year old boy who was hospitalized for 15 months at the age of eight for suicidal depression. This boy also has learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.). His psychiatrists put him on 40 mg. of Prozac, 100 mg. of Ritalin, as well as Clomadine and Imiprimine, which he remained on for years, keeping him in a barely functional, drugged state. Working with an alternative medical professional, his mother withdrew him gradually from these drugs and began a protocol which included Ginkgo Biloba, high amounts of Vitamin C and B vitamins. In the last few months she has added two teaspoons of Camu Camu (divided dose on empty stomach with water) and one capsule a day (500 mg.) of Maca to his protocol. She reports that since adding these two herbs her son's immune function has improved--he gets sick less often, his mood is better - "it has smoothed him out" - and the combination of these two herbs have increased his ability to focus.

Camu Camu is at the top of Null's list of plants with medicinal effectiveness against the herpes virus. All forms of the herpes virus lie dormant at the base of the spine and become active when the immune system is stressed beyond its ability to respond effectively against pathenogens. Common stressors include emotional upsets, other illnesses, prescription drugs, insufficient rest, poor diet, menstrual periods, vaginal yeast infections, and too much sunlight on the skin. Genital herpes is usually transmitted sexually. The principal anti-viral pharmaceutical medicine is acyclovir, which has unpleasant and even toxic side effects. The herpes virus takes a number of different forms and is widespread today as a public health problem in the United States. More than 50% of the U.S. population gets cold sores, which is the result of the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1). The Epstein-Barr virus is a common form of the herpes virus which may linger in the body for years, raising the total viral load which the body must combat. Yet another form of the herpes virus is genital herpes which is caused by the herpes simplex virus 2. In total, more than 80% of the U.S. population suffers from some kind of herpes infection. Null lists 19 plants which contain anti-herpetic phyto-chemicals. Camu Camu is listed as the most potent.

Tropical fruit camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia) has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Oxidative stress as well as inflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Although, various anti-oxidative dietary supplements have been evaluated for their ability to prevent atherosclerosis, no effective ones have been determined at present. "Camu-camu" (Myrciaria dubia) is an Amazonian fruit that offers high vitamin C content. However, its anti-oxidative property has not been evaluated in vivo in humans.

METHODS:

To assess the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of camu-camu in humans, 20 male smoking volunteers, considered to have an accelerated oxidative stress state, were recruited and randomly assigned to take daily 70 ml of 100% camu-camu juice, corresponding to 1050 mg of vitamin C (camu-camu group; n=10) or 1050 mg of vitamin C tablets (vitamin C group; n=10) for 7 days.

RESULTS:

After 7 days, oxidative stress markers such as the levels of urinary 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (P<0.05) and total reactive oxygen species (P<0.01) and inflammatory markers such as serum levels of high sensitivity C reactive protein (P<0.05), interleukin (IL)-6 (P<0.05), and IL-8 (P<0.01) decreased significantly in the camu-camu group, while there was no change in the vitamin C group.

CONCLUSIONS:

Our results suggest that camu-camu juice may have powerful anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, compared to vitamin C tablets containing equivalent vitamin C content. These effects may be due to the existence of unknown anti-oxidant substances besides vitamin C or unknown substances modulating in vivo vitamin C kinetics in camu-camu.

Chia Seeds

  • Description
  • More Details
Salvia hispanica (Chia) is a plant of the genus Salvia in the family Lamiaceae native to Mexico. The word chia is derived from the Aztec word chian, meaning oily. The present Mexican state of Chiapas received its name from the Nahua "chia water or river."

Chia was cultivated by the Aztecs in pre-Columbian times. Jesuit chroniclers referred to chia as the third most important crop to the Aztecs behind only corn and beans, and ahead of amaranth. Tribute and taxes to the Aztec priesthood and nobility were often paid in chia seed.

Two tablespoons of chia – about 25 grams – provide about seven grams of fibre. This dose also includes calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, manganese, copper, niacin, and zinc.

In a preliminary study from the University of Toronto (2006), researchers gave 21 diabetics either a supplement made from chia, or grains with similar fibre content. The results were interesting. After three months, blood pressure from the chia group dropped 10 points diastolic and 5 points systolic., while the blood pressure from the grain group remained steady.

Taste-wise, chia seeds have a nutty flavour, and are a healthful addition to the diet sprinkled on cereals, yogurt or salads. You can also eat them whole or mix them into flour when baking bread, muffins or other baked goods.  They are also great to sprout.

New season's organic white and black chia is now in stock!

A great benefit of the chia seed is its durability. Unlike flax-seeds, chia can be stored for long periods without becoming rancid, and does not require grinding. Chia also contains higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids than flax-seeds, yielding 25-30% extractable oil, mostly α-linolenic acid (ALA).  Chia seeds typically contain 20% protein, 34% oil, 25% dietary fiber (mostly soluble with high molecular weight), and significant levels of antioxidants (chlorogenic and caffeic acids, myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol flavonols). The oil from chia seeds contains a very high concentration of omega-3 fatty acid — approximately 64%. Chia seeds contain no gluten and trace levels of sodium.Chia is also is a source of antioxidants and a variety of amino acids. For all these health related benefits, chia is in the process of application before the EU authorities to be considered as a novel food.

Known as the running food, its use as a high energy endurance food has been recorded as far back as the ancient Aztecs. It was said the Aztec warriors subsisted on chia seed during the conquests. The Indians of the south west would eat as little as a teaspoon full when going on a 24 hour forced march. Indians running form the Colorado River to the California coast to trade turquoise for seashells would only bring the Chia seed for their nourishment.

Chia is grown commercially in its native Mexico, and in Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador and Guatemala. In 2008, Australia was the world's largest producer of chia. A similar species, golden chia, is used in the same way but not widely grown commercially. Salvia hispanica seed is marketed most often under its common name "Chia," but also under several trademarks, including "Sachia," "Anutra," "Chia Sage," "Salba," and "Tresalbio."

Chia is an annual herb growing to 1m tall, with opposite leaves 4 – 8cm long and 3 – 5cm broad. Its flowers are purple or white and are produced in numerous clusters in a spike at the end of each stem. Chia seeds are typically small ovals with a diameter of about one millimeter. They are mottle-colored with brown, gray, black and white.

How to Use Chia

Chia seed may be eaten raw as a dietary fiber and omega-3 supplement. Grinding chia seeds produces a meal called pinole, which can be made into porridge or cakes. Chia seeds soaked in water or fruit juice is also often consumed and is known in Mexico as chia fresca. The soaked seeds are gelatinous in texture and are used in gruels, porridges and puddings. Ground chia seed is used in baked goods including breads, cakes and biscuits.

Chia sprouts are used in a similar manner as alfalfa sprouts in salads, sandwiches and other dishes.

If you try placing a spoonful of chia in a glass of water and leaving it for approximately 30 minutes or so, when you return the glass will appear to contain not seeds or water, but an almost solid gelatin. This gel-forming reaction is due to the soluble fiber in the chia. Researchers believe this same gel-forming phenomenon takes place in the stomach when food containing these gummy fibers, known as mucilages, are eaten. The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, thus slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar.

In addition to the obvious benefits for diabetics, this slowing in the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar offers the ability for creating endurance. Carbohydrates are the fuel for energy in our bodies. Prolonging their conversion into sugar stabilises metabolic changes, diminishing the surges of highs and lows creating a longer duration in their fueling effects.

One of the exceptional qualities of the Chia seed is its hydrophilic properties, having the ability to absorb more than 12 times its weight in water. Its ability to hold on to water offers the ability to prolong hydration. Fluids and electrolytes provide the environment that supports the life of all the body’s cells. Their concentration and composition are regulated to remain as constant as possible. With chia seeds, you retain moisture, regulate, more efficiently, the bodies absorption of nutrients and body fluids. Because there is a greater efficiency in the utilization of body fluids, the electrolyte balance is maintained.

Fluid and electrolyte imbalances occur when large amounts of fluids are lost resulting from vomiting, diarrhea, high fever, or more commonly from sweating? The loss of extracellular fluid occurs in these conditions. Intercellular fluid then shifts out of cells to compensate, causing abnormal distribution of electrolytes across cell membranes resulting in cellular malfunction. Retaining and efficiently utilising body fluids maintains the integrity of extracellular fluids, protecting intercellular fluid balance. The results of which ensure normal electrolyte dispersion across cell membranes (electrolyte balance), maintaining fluid balances, resulting in normal cellular function.

Chia seeds are the definitive hydrophilic colloid for the 21 century diet. Hydrophilic colloids, (a watery, gelatinous, glue-like substance) form the underlying elements of all living cells. They posses the property of readily taking up and giving off the substances essential to cell life. The precipitation of the hydrophilic colloids cause cell death.

The food we eat, in the raw state, consist largely of hydrophilic colloids. When cooked on the other had, precipitates its colloidal integrity. This change in the colloidal state alters the hydration capacity of our foods so as to interfere with their ability to absorb digestive juices. If we were to eat a raw diet we wouldn’t need to introduce the addition of any hydrophilic colloid to our diet. Uncooked foods contain sufficient hydrophilic colloid to keep gastric mucosa in the proper condition. But even with raw foods, they must first be partially broken down by the digestive juices, beginning in the mouth and continuing through he upper tract, to allow the gelatinous reaction to take place. Because of this upper tract digestive process, those who suffer from slow digestion, gas formation, relaxed cardia and heartburn in which the burning is due to organic acids instead of an excess of the normal hydrochloric acid, which frequently accompanies chronic inflammation disease affecting such organs as the heart, lungs, gall bladder and appendix, are usually restricted from eating raw foods. A hydrophilic colloid incorporated with these foods may be used either in connection with the patients regular food or with whatever diet the physician feels is best suited for his patient.  The patient with gastric atony or nervous indigestion who complains of heartburn and/or vomiting four to five hours after eating is often helped.  There is a lessening of emptying time if the stomach and an improvement in gastric tone.

Chia seed may be used in conjunction with almost any diet your doctor or nutritionist feels is necessary for your condition.  The Chia’s hydrophilic colloidal properties aid the digestion of any foods contributing to the patients suffering as a result of a sour stomach.  Even if you have sensitivity to certain foods, they may be tolerated with slight discomfort or none at all if a hydrophilic colloid is made a part of your diet.  The positive effects on the digestion in the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract often leads to puree their foods may find benefits from hydrophilic colloids which may lead to eliminating the necessity for pureeing.  Even raw vegetables, green salads and fruits, which are largely restricted, may often be given to these patients with little or no discomfort after a short time.

There are several hydrophilic foods available that offer these natural benefits.  Cactus juice, beet juice, agar, the edible seaweeds, and many proprietary preparations, which include the silica gels, mucilaginous substance of vegetables origin, are among colloids that prove effective.  Each one of the above mentioned substances have one or more drawbacks.   They are either too expensive, they may produce toxic side effects, bad tasting, not readily available, insufficient hydration capability, or it is indigestible.

Chia seed, a muscle and tissue builder and an energizer of endurance with extensive hydration properties, possesses none of the above disadvantage, and because if its physiochemical properties, supports effective treatment in immediate problems of digestion.  Exactly why this should be true may be puzzling at first.  However, if we consider the effect of unusual irritation upon the nerves of the gastrointestinal canal, it is reasonable the think that a less violent and more balanced digestion might quiet the activity of the otherwise hyperactive gut.  Inasmuch as the same foods, which formerly produced irritation, may frequently be continued without harm when hydrophilic colloids are used.   The relief to nerve irritation seems to offer a logical explanation.

The change, in the lower gastrointestinal tract, is due to the effect of the hydrophilic colloid and to a more complete digestion-taking place along the entire tract due to physiochemical alterations.   Both factors are important, as there is undoubtedly a better assimilation of food that supports enhanced nutritional absorption while significantly extending necessary hydration as well as encouraging proper elimination.

As a source of protein, the Chia, after ingestion, is digested and absorbed very easily.  This results in rapid transport to the tissue and utilization by the cells.  This efficient assimilation makes the Chia very effective when rapid development of tissue takes place, primarily during growth periods if children and adolescents.  Also for the growth and regeneration of tissue during pregnancy and lactation, and this would also include regeneration of muscle tissue for conditioning, athletes, weight lifters, etc.

Another unique quality if the Chia seed is its high oil content, and the richest vegetables source for the essential omega-3 fatty acid.  It has approximately three to ten times the oil concentrations of most grains and one and a half to two times the protein concentrations of other grains.   These oils, unsaturated fatty acids, are the essential oils your body needs to help emulsify and absorb the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, & K.  Chia seeds are rich in the unsaturated fatty acid, linoleic, which the body cannot manufacture.  When there are rich amounts of linoleic acid sufficiently supplied to the body trough diet, linoleic and arachidonic acids can be synthesized from linoleic acid.

Unsaturated fatty acids are important for respiration of vital organs and make it easier for oxygen to be transported by the blood stream to all cells, tissues, and organs. They also help maintain resilience and lubrication of all cells and combine with protein and cholesterol to form living membranes that hold the body cells together.

Unsaturated fatty acids are essential for normal glandular activity, especially of the adrenal glands and the thyroid glad.  They nourish the skin cells and are essential for healthy mucus membranes and nerves.  The unsaturated fatty acids function in the body by cooperating with vitamin D in making calcium available to the tissues, assisting in the assimilation of phosphorus, and stimulating the conversion of carotene into vitamin A.   Fatty acids are related to normal functioning of the reproductive system.   Chia sees contain beneficial long-chain triglycerides (LCT) in the right proportion to reduce cholesterol on arterial walls.

The Chia seed is also a rich source of calcium as it contains the important mineral boron, which acts as catalyst for the absorption and utilization of the calcium by the body.

Chia, as an ingredient, is a dieters dream food.  There are limitless ways to incorporate the Chia seed into your diet.  Chia must be prepared with pure water before using recipes.  The seed will absorb 9 times it’s weight in water in less than 10 minutes and is very simple to prepare.

Food Extender/Calorie Displacer:  The optimum ratio of water to seed, for most recipes, is 9 part water to 1 part seed.  One pound if seed will make 10 pounds of Chia gel.  This is the most unique structural quality of the Chia seed.  The seed’s hydrophilic (water absorbing) saturated cells hold the water, so when it is mixed with foods, it displaces calories and fat without diluting flavor.  In fact, I have found that because Chia gel displaces rather than dilutes, it creates more surface area and can actually enhance the flavor rather than dilute it. Chia gel also works as a fat replacer for many recipes.

Making Chia Gel (9 to 1 ratio): Put water in a sealable container and slowly pour seed into water while whisking briskly. This process will avoid any clumping of the seed.  Wait a couple of minutes, whisk again and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes.  Whisk again before using or storing in refrigerator (Gel will keep up to 2 weeks). You can add this mix to jams, jellies, hot or cold cereals, yogurts, mustard, catsup, tarter sauce, BBQ sauce, etc..  Add the gel, between 50% to 75% by volume, to any of the non-bake mentioned foods, mix well and taste. You will notice a very smooth texture with the integrity of the flavour intact. In addition to adding up to 50% to 75% more volume to the foods used, you have displaced calories and fat by incorporating an ingredient that is 90% water. Use as a fat replacer, for energy and endurance, or for added great taste, buy substituting the oil in your breads with Chia gel. Top your favorite bread dough before baking with Chia gel (for toping on baked goods, breads, cookies, piecrust, etc., reduce the water ration to 8 parts water to 1 part Chia seed) for added shelf life.

There are additional benefits from the Chia seed aside from the nutritive enhancements when used as an ingredient. It was also used by the Indians and missionaries as a poultice for gunshot wounds and other serious injuries. They would pack the wounds with Chia seeds to avoid infections and promote haling. If you place a seed or two in your eyes it will clean your eyes and will also help to clear up any infections. There is a wealth of benefits beyond the information outlined in this article and treasure-trove of benefits yet to be discovered. Chia seed, having a qualitatively unique situational richness along with a profound nutritive profile is one of man’s most useful and beneficial foods and is destined to be the Ancient Food of the Future.

Chlorella - Lifestream Open Cell Pure Green Microalgae: 100g

Chorella100
  • Description
  • More Details

Lifestream Chlorella is a natural microscopic plant containing over 20 vitamins and minerals, 65% protein and is abundant in essential micronutrients and RNA/ DNA nucleic acids. It is nature’s richest source of Chlorophyll. As such, it has powerful cleansing and detoxifying properties and makes an excellent blood tonic.

Unique to Chlorella is CGF (Chlorella Growth Factor) – its inherent genetic stability gives it the potential to help repair damaged organs, tissues, DNA and RNA. DNA is the master substance of life carrying all inherited traits and directing the activity of each cell. The detoxification capability of Lifestream Chlorella is due to its incredibly high content of chlorophyll and its ‘cracked’ cell walls. They have the uncanny ability to ‘grab onto’ unwanted materials, pollutants and some heavy metal residues in the bowel and intestines and help to flush them from the body.

Are You Clean Inside?

It is no secret that much of the food we eat is peppered with chemicals - insecticides, pesticides, preservatives, colours and flavours. It can also often be loaded with saturated fats and refined carbohydrates. It is because of all these toxic materials we eat that bowel problems have soared, not only in New Zealand, but also in Australia, the U.S.A, the United Kingdom and Asia.

As this ‘sludge’ clogs up our bodies, our system slows down and our cells find it hard to absorb anything good and end up being drowned in slime and junk. It can’t be absorbed, we can’t get rid of it as waste, and so it sits and rots inside us!

Is Your Bowel Toxic?

Many people are horrified to hear that one sign of a good healthy bowel is having two to three bowel motions a day! Symptoms of over-toxicity or ‘rotting’in the bowels are generally seen as feeling sluggish and tired, low energy, irritability, bad breath, body odour, headaches, loss of appetite, flatulence, infrequent bowel motions and often just a feeling of being unwell. As more research is done, it is being discovered that many diseases are aggravated or even caused by poor bowel health. If you can’t get rid of the toxins or waste in your bowel, your body will not have the ability to function or heal properly. This is why cleansing and detoxifying the body regularly is so mportant. The main objective is to increase our body’s ability to get rid of waste and to greatly improve our ability to absorb the essential nutrients from our ood.One of the most powerful and natural ways to do this is by using premium quality ‘outdoor-grown’ Lifestream Chlorella. Studies have shown that ifestream Chlorella is highly abundant in unique phytonutrients and antioxidants that can offer protection against chronic disease, radiation, toxins and other pollutants in our air, water and food supply.

The Benefits of Being ‘Clean’ Inside

• A healthy, regular bowel
• Clear, vibrant skin
• High levels of energy
• Fresh, pleasant breath
• Feeling clear-headed and focused
• A good sense of well being and vitality

Chlorophyll - Clean and Green

Our grandmothers have always told us to ‘eat our greens’. One of the main reasons ‘greens’ are so good for you is that they contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a powerful dark green plant nutrient that has been referred to as ‘Green Blood’ because it looks like the hemoglobin molecule in human blood - as such it has powerful cleansing and detoxifying properties, makes an excellent blood tonic and has a long history of being effective at deodorizing bad smells.

One of the most effective and easiest ways to get the benefits of chlorophyll is in Lifestream Chlorella, which contains the highest natural source of chlorophyll available. Lifestream Chlorella helps cleanse stagnant blood. When your blood is clean, so follows the liver, bowel, organs, cells and tissues. You can really feel and smell the difference!

Japanese Studies Show Chlorella in action

Chlorella has been used to detoxify people suffering from pesticide and insecticide exposure. A study conducted at the Institute for Environmental Pollution Research in Japan gave 30 patients 4-6 grams of Chlorella per day for a one-year period. Reported improvements included feeling less tired, better digestion and normal bowel movements.

Give your body an internal deodorant!

Lifestream Chlorella cleans and detoxifies the body on many levels:

– Cleans and flushes out stored waste and pollutants in the body
– Aids the liver in ridding the body of toxins
– Acts as an internal deodorant, refreshing the bowel and breath and helping to reduce body odour
– Helps cleanse stagnant blood

Who should take Lifestream Chlorella?

Lifestream Chlorella is suitable for those wishing to maintain a clean and healthy bowel and liver by feeding the body nutrients that cleanse, detoxify and rejuvenate their system. It can be used for a short, intense detox and cleansing programme as well as for ongoing use to maintain a clean and healthy internal system.

Symptoms of over-toxicity or ‘rotting’ in the bowels are generally seen as:

• Sluggishness
• Low energy
• Irritability
• A spotty, pimply complexion
• Irregular bowel motions
• Bad breath
• Body odour
• Flatulence
• An ongoing feeling of being ‘under the weather’

How to take Lifestream Chlorella

Lifestream Chlorella is available in convenient minitablets or in powder to make a delicious fruit smoothie.

When taking Lifestream Chlorella, drink at least 4 glasses of pure water daily.

Short Two Week Cleanse

Begin by taking 4 grams daily (20 mini tablets or one rounded teaspoon of powder) with food for a two week period.
During this period, concentrate on eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (especially dark green leafy vegies), whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans and pulses and vegetable based proteins. For ideal results and to maintain your ‘clean insides’, follow up with the long term cleanse below.

Long Term Daily Cleanse

If you are eating a natural, fresh foods diet, take 2 grams daily (10 mini tablets or 2/3 of a level teaspoon of powder) with food. If your diet includes processed, refined and fatty foods or regular consumption of alcohol, caffeine or tobacco,
then your long term dose should be 3 grams daily (15 mini tablets or one level teaspoon of powder) with food.

We believe Lifestream Chlorella is the finest quality Chlorella available anywhere in the world.

These are our reasons:

1. PREMIUM QUALITY ‘OUTDOOR-GROWN’ CHLORELLA
Lifestream Chlorella has been ‘outdoor-grown’ in world-renowned pristine sub-tropical coral reef islands with pioneering technology for over 35 years. ‘Outdoor-grown’ Chlorella is far superior to indoor-grown Chlorella with much higher levels of Chlorophyll, CGF, Iron, Carotenoids, Calcium and Protein.

2. CERTIFIED BY JHFA FOR UNMATCHED PURITY
Lifestream Chlorella is guaranteed to be 100% pure and 100% GE FREE. We guarantee no pesticides, herbicides, fillers, binders, additives, chemicals, synthetics or excipients are ever used.Lifestream Chlorella is certified by and exceeds the strict standards set by Japan Health Food and Nutrition Food Association (JHFA).
These manufacturing standards are among the toughest and most stringent in the world

3. DIGESTIBILITY
Lifestream Chlorella uses a unique Jet-Spray-Dry-Breaking Cell technology that gives an astonishing 82.8% digestibility.
Some Chlorella’s use the ‘heating and blanching’ method and
this only gives a low 50% digestibility.

4. NUTRITIONALLY RICHER
The Jet-Spray-Dry-Breaking Cell technology achieves a higher and more stable nutritive Chlorella than other methods.
Very importantly, Lifestream Chlorella is thoroughly moved and agitated during cultivation to increase the protein levels.

5. ENVIRONMENTALLY PURE AND SUSTAINABLE GROWING CONDITIONS
Lifestream Chlorella is fed with mineral-rich water from coral reef mountains on world-renowned pristine sub-tropical coral reef islands. This is a pure, unspoiled and clean environment with very high natural sun levels. Lifestream Chlorella is the highest quality strain of Chlorella available.

Lifestream Chlorella can be taken on an ongoing basis to help maintain a cleansed and rejuvenated internal system.
Because it is a blood tonic and not a high fibre product, the effect on the bowel when doing a cleanse using Lifestream Chlorella is generally more subtle.

Some people can initially experience changes in bowel motions, headaches, spots, tiredness and generally feel unwell during the early stages of a cleanse. These are all signs that your body is responding to the cleansing and detoxification process by elimination. They should subside and, in time, be replaced with a feeling of lightness, increased energy and enhanced well being. In the very rare case of vomiting or nausea or if intestinal pain or constipation continues,
then discontinue use and healthcare advice should be sought immediately.

Chlorella Powder - Open Cell - Pure Wellbeing - Organic

  • Description
  • More Details
Nature's ultimate detoxifier, purifier, cleanser and deodoriser.  Chlorella is a pure green microlalgae abundant in essential micronutrients and RNA/DNA nucleic acids.

The “Double” Secret of Chlorella’s Success

Chlorella has helped thousands of people get their health back on track, because it has something no other food has to help you undo years of damage done by illness and unhealthy habits with amazing results. Because they’re healthier on the inside, many people report such positive changes as:

  • Maintaining healthy circulation, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels
  • Cleansing of toxins from junk food, cigarettes, and poor diet that bog you down and trigger illness
  • A more restful night’s sleep and more get-up-and-go to enjoy activities you love
  • Better elimination and help for ulcers and digestive upset
  • Improved skin tone, soft, thick hair and strong nails

    ...and so much more!

How can one whole food supplement do all of this? At the very core of each Chlorella cell lies two amazing properties:

1. The richest source of nucleic acids — more than any other food on earth! You may know that nucleic acids are the basic building blocks of life — and are critical to keep your natural defense system working in peak condition. An abundance of these nucleic acids helps your body to reproduce the immune-enhancing cells that can help you feel young, healthy and vibrant.

Research shows that your body loses its precious ability to make nucleic acids — or RNA and DNA — as you age, making your cells inefficient. Illness creeps up on you before you know it. This means YOU feel weak and tired and old. You even look old!

One of the best ways to revitalize your body is to get these vital nucleic acids into your diet.

Unfortunately, most foods today are depleted of nucleic acids through processing. But ounce-per-ounce, Chlorella has much more than even canned sardines, which were once thought to have the highest nucleic acid content of any food.

For you this means Chlorella can give you stronger natural defenses to get healthy and stay healthy!

2. The remarkable Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) provides super youth enhancement to help your body renew itself and fight off the harmful effects of the premature aging process.

You won’t find CGF in any vitamin, mineral or herb.

It is only found in chlorella and it contains a unique mixture of nature’s most potent agents that nourish and replenish your body. CGF is naturally “built in” to the heart of each Chlorella cell in a way that optimizes your body’s ability to absorb and benefit from it the most.

How does it do this? CGF actually gives your body “the signal” it needs to build NEW cells. When you take Chlorella with CGF, you get a constant supply of strong new cells to revitalize your health and make you feel young again.

The internal programming of CGF makes it possible for the chlorella cells to actually quadruple themselves every 24 hours while they’re first being grown in their natural environment. So one cell becomes four new cells, and so on and so on. And when cells keep dividing to create new cells, you see and feel renewal in so many ways.

Chlorella helps

  • replenish your cells for more youthful skin and a fresher appearance
  • give you more energy to exercise and be more active so you can burn more unwanted fat easier
  • stimulate new cell growth for stronger, healthier muscles and tissues
  • speed up your body’s natural revitalization

Please buy below

Benefits

- Low Glycemic index rating 35 (honey 55-70)
- Great natural sweetener for diabetics, people on restricted diets
- Reduces cravings and spikes in blood sugar
- Rich in 17 key amino acids which assist in the growth, repair and maintenance of body tissues
- Rich in glutamine and may assist in recovery from serious illness

Coconut nectar is naturally low on the Glycemic Index (GI), which has benefits for weight control and improving glucose and lipid levels in people with diabetes (type 1 and type 2) and produces slow release energy.

The major component of coconut sugar is sucrose (70-79%) followed by glucose and fructose (3-9%) each.  Minor variations will occur, due to differences in primary processing, raw material source, tree age and variety of coconut.

Coconut palm nectar is high in Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc and Iron (similar to coconut water) and is a natural source of the vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and C.  It’s also very rich in other minerals and enzymes which aid in the slow absorption into the bloodstream.

Please note that some coconut palm sugar on the market is also mixed with cane sugar and other malt-based ingredients.  Our coconut palm sugar is PURE coconut palm nectar. No cane sugar added.  No maltodextrin added.  Just pure, unadulterated coconut palm sugar made from 100% coconut palm nectar from Coco Nucifera, the green coconut tree.

Coconut Oil

  • More Details
We are now pleased to be able to supply totally raw Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.

Characteristics of Our Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Our Virgin Coconut Oil is a truly unrefined raw coconut oil made from organic coconuts.

How is This Oil Used?
Virgin Coconut Oil is a food, and is one of the best cooking oils you can use. It has been a staple cooking oil for thousands of years in tropical climates. As a cooking oil, its chemical structure is kept intact and therefore is resistant to mutations of fatty acid chains even when used in higher cooking temperatures, unlike most vegetable oils. Research shows that the medium chain fatty acids found in coconut oil boosts the body's metabolism, raises body temperatures, and helps provide greater energy which can lead to weight loss.

Virgin Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a nutrient that supports the body's immune system. Lauric acid is also found in human mother's milk.  Dr. Mary Enig, PhD, a world expert on oils and fats, suggests the average adult include about 3.5 tablespoons of coconut oil per day in their diet.

According to Mary Enig, Ph.D., the world's leading expert on fats and oils:

"Coconut oil has a unique role in the diet as an important physiologically functional food. The health and nutritional benefits that can be derived from consuming coconut oil have been recognized in many parts of the world for centuries.

A review of the diet/heart disease literature relevant to coconut oil clearly indicates that coconut oil is at worst neutral with respect to atherogenicity of fats and oils, and in fact is likely to be a beneficial oil for prevention and treatment of some heart disease.

Additionally, coconut oil provides a source of antimicrobial lipids for individuals with compromised immune systems, and is a non-promoting fat with respect to chemical carcinogenesis."

FAQ

Is The Coconut Oil Heated in its Processing?

No - not at any stage in the manufacturing process. Commercial coconut oils, by contrast, undergo steam deodorization at temperatures of around 400 degrees.

Is Virgin Coconut Oil Destroyed by Heat? What about Enzymes?

Coconut oil is NOT destroyed or changed chemically in anyway from its original form by using low heat. Unlike other plant oils, the medium chain fatty acids are very resistant to any change via heat. Even commercial oils heated to a very high temperature have their medium chain fatty acids kept in tact. This makes coconut oil one of the best oils to use in cooking, because it does not break down easily.

Many have expressed concern that even low-level heat can destroy enzymes and other beneficial nutrients in coconut oil. But one needs to consider that this is a tropical oil from a tropical plant grown in a very hot climate. The oil inside an airtight coconut still growing high up on a coconut tree will already see temperatures up to 50 degrees C during its growing season. Laboratory tests done on VCO, for example, have shown levels of Vitamin E that are 30 times more than commercial refined coconut oil. As to enzymes, they are present in the coconut meat but not in the oil. One would not want enzymes in the oil as it would break down the oil and cause it to go rancid. So there is no coconut oil on the market that would contain enzymes. You need to eat a coconut fresh off the tree to benefit from plant enzymes. All plant-based oils are separated from the plants they grew in, and do not contain appreciable amounts of enzymes.

So it is a myth that there are coconut oils on the market that are "live" and "see no heat." Coconuts are native to the tropics, where temperatures are very hot.  Any coconut oil distributed anywhere has "seen heat."

Coconut Sugar

  • Description
  • More Details

Coconut Sugar is a great tasting cane sugar alternative produced from coconut palm blossoms. With a rich toffee-like flavour, it's certified organic, minimally processed and has not been filtered.

Compared to cane sugar, coconut trees produce 50-75% more sugar per acre but use less than one fifth of the soil nutrients and water, making Coconut Sugar an extremely sustainable product.

Coconut Sugar is naturally low on the Glycemic Index (GI), with a rating of 35. In comparison, most commercial Honeys are GI 55 and Cane Sugars are GI 68. Low GI ratings allow for a slow release of energy, efficiently fuelling your day-to-day activities and avoiding the “highs” and “lows” associated with most commercial sugars.

Many people with a sensitivity for Fructose have found Coconut Sugar to be beneficial since it is primarily Sucrose based (up to 89% depending on the crop). However, it is important to note that it isn't entirely Fructose free and can contain between 3 to 5%.

Pricing:

Health Benefits

Another point to consider is that Sucrose itself is a disaccharide made up of a combination of Glucose and Fructose so the exact amount of Fructose may vary accordingly.
Due to its rich mineral profile, Coconut Sugar has numerous health benefits but like all concentrated foods, it should be enjoyed in moderation.

Our Coconut Sugar is unfiltered and preservative free. It has a low on the Glycemic Index (GI) of 35. By comparison, most honey has a GI of 55 and cane sugars have a  GI of 68.

The Glycemic Index provides a ranking for carbohydrates according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Foods with a low GI (less than 40), produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels, avoiding the sugar “highs” and “lows” that we experience when consuming foods with high GIs.

Coconut Sugar also has a nutritional and mineral content that is richer than most other commercially available sweeteners. When compared to brown sugar, Coconut Sugar has twice the iron, four times the magnesium and over 10 times the amount of zinc.

Many people with an intolerance to fructose have found Coconut Sugar to be beneficial since it is primarily sucrose based (up to 89% depending on the crop). However, it is important to note that it isn't entirely fructose free and can contain between 3 to 5%.

Another point to consider is that sucrose is a disaccharide made up of a combination of glucose and fructose, so the exact amount of fructose may vary.

Due to its rich mineral profile, Coconut Sugar has numerous health benefits but like all concentrated foods, it should be enjoyed in moderation.

How to use:
Coconut Sugar can be used 1:1 as a replacement for cane sugar in any recipe. It's suitable for baking, and makes a great addition to tea and coffee.

Growing

Yogyakarta in central Java is the home of the Indonesian villagers who grow and harvest our Coconut Sugar. They use a centuries old technique to provide us with this healthy sweetener, which in turn ensures a steady source of income for their community. Our Coconut Sugar gives these farmers the potential for a better life. This is a unique tradition of the Javanese and they are known to produce the best quality Coconut Sugar. Farmers climb the coconut palms and collect the sugar blossom nectar by gently slicing the flower. Click on the video tab to the right to see
them doing it.

Processing

Once harvested the nectar is transferred into kettles. The evaporation process lowers the moisture content of the nectar before it is allowed to set into a solid nectar "brick". Once the nectar has cooled and solidified it is then ground into granules.

Tropical palms are an ecologically beneficial tree crop that grow in diverse, wildlife supportive agro-ecosystems, restore damaged soils and require very little water. In fact, since coconut palms can grow in such severely depleted soil, using so little water, that they require very little maintenance. Not only that, but over time they actually improve soil structure, fertility and water conservation, thereby allowing marginalised land to become lush jungle.

Compared to cane sugar, coconut trees produce 50-75% more sugar per acre but use less than one fifth of the soil nutrients and water, making Coconut Sugar an extremely sustainable product.

This has led many traditional communities throughout the world to consider coconut palms as the “Tree of Life”, as one tree can provide a multitude of usable goods, such as roofing material, food, coconut water, building material and shade for crops.

Loving Earth Organic Goji Berries are certified organic Goji Berries. They are grown in a pristine, certified organic part of the Ningxia autonomous region, located between Tibet and Inner Mongolia. The goji berry is sacred to the people of this remote autonomous region and they hold a special festival every year to honor and celebrate the life giving qualities of this extraordinary berry.

Are you wondering how a tiny red berry can have such a positive effect on your health?

    * To start, the goji berry is higher in antioxidants than any other known food.
    * The goji berry contains 18 amino acids – the building blocks for protein.
    * The goji berry contains over 12 times more protein than apples, oranges, or strawberries.
    * The goji berry is a better source of beta-carotene than carrots themselves.
    * 21 trace minerals, including Germanium
    * 6 essential fatty acids including Linoleic acid, which significantly promotes body fat loss
    * Vitamins B1, B2, B6, E
    * 500 times more Vitamin C than oranges
    * 4 Unique Polysaccharides (Master Molecules) found in no other food source
    * 15 times more nutritional iron than spinach
    *  Beta Sitosterol: An anti-inflammatory agent found to lower cholesterol, and used to treat sexual impotence and prostrate enlargement.
    *  Zeaxanthin and Lutine: Valued for their role in protecting the eyes.
    *  Betaine: Used by the liver to produce Choline which assists detoxification reactions in the liver. Betaine is known to protect DNA, enhance
memory, promote muscle growth and protects us from fatty liver disease.
    *  Cyperone: A sesquiterpene used in treatment of cervical cancer. It is also known to benefit heart and blood pressure problems as well as
        menstruation problems.
    *  Solavetivone: A powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent.
    *  Physalin: A natural compound that boosts the immune system. Found to be effective in treating leukaemia, hepatitis B and cancer.

Goji Berry Antioxidants

Free radicals damage cells and DNA, increase the cancer risk, and accelerate the aging rocess. The more antioxidants, the more effective the neutralizing capacity is in slowing down the aging process. If free radicals go unchecked, they can even attack and damage DNA, possibly causing deformation and mutation of the blueprinted cells.

Immunity Enhancer

Due to aging, the body's immune system often becomes dysfunctional, where in immune cells can have difficulty recognizing the difference between the body's cells and foreign cells. This can lead to auto-immune problems. The polysaccharides found in Goji berries have been known to inhibit three kinds of inflammation. These polysaccharides were also found to stimulate the interleukin-2 and gamma interferon, which are anti-inflammatory and induce immune responses.

ORAC Test

The ORAC Test is a standardized test adopted by the US. Department of Agriculture to measure the Total Antioxidant Potency of foods and nutritional supplements. The antioxidant capacity of the blood seems to be tightly regulated.  A significant increase in antioxidants of 15 to 20 percent is possible by increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in ORAC value.  Dr. Cao and Dr. Prior of the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University have established a recommended 5,000 ORAC Units Daily to have a significant impact on plasma and tissue antioxidant capacity and for helping prevent certain age related diseases.

Dried Goji berries and Human Growth Hormone

Goji berries are known to have a unique polysaccharide that stimulates the pituitary gland in the anterior of the brain to produce more Human Growth Hormone, the master hormone in our bodies. HGH is know to slow down, and even reverse some of the effects of aging. For centuries, people in Asia that have customarily eaten Goji berries have been documented to live longer and healthier lives with little or no incidence of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimers disease, fibromyalgia, lupus, multiple scirosis, or a host of other "dread" diseases that are afflicting many of the Industrialized Nations of the world.

Professor Li Qing Yuen is documented as being the oldest person to have ever lived in recorded history. Born in 1678 and living to 1930, he was documented by the Government of China as having lived to 252 years of age. Twice he received Longevity Awards from the Government. It is said he ate Goji berries on a regular daily basis.

More Benefits

Goji berries have been traditionally regarded as a longevity, strength-building, and sexual potency food of the highest order.  The goji berry was celebrated as early as the first century A.D. by Shen Nong Ben Cao in the Divine Farmer's Handbook of Natural Medicine (one of the most important texts in the history of Chinese medicine).

"Lycium [the goji berry] tonifies jing [vital energy] and qi [breath] and strengthens the yin tao [capacity for physical exercise]."

  - Tao Hong Jing, Commentary on the Divine Farmer's Handbook of Natural Medicine

Recently, in several study groups with elderly people, goji berries were given once a day for 3 weeks.  Many beneficial results were experienced and 67% of the patients T cell transformation functions tripled and the activity of the patients white cell interleukin-2 doubled. In addition, the results showed that all the patients spirit and optimism increased significantly, appetite improved in 95% of the patients, 95% of the patients slept better, and 35% of the patients partially recovered their sexual function.

Many people who now eat Goji berries on a daily basis notice improved eyesight, restoration of hair color, improved libido, mood enhancement, noticeable improvement in energy levels, better sleeping habits, and more zest for life.

"Pang jia [goji berries] cure illness related to the heart and clear heat [discomfort and illness] within the body."

- Gama Rangjunduojie, Tibetan Medical Doctor

Production

The plants grow like bushes with vines that reach over 15 feet. The berries are never touched by hand as they will oxidize and turn black if touched while fresh. They are shaken onto mats, and then dried in the shade. These berries are grown without pesticides or other chemicals in one of the purest places on earth.

Goji Berries - Organic - Loving Earth

  • Description
  • More Details

The Goji berry is a deep-red, dried fruit about the same size as a raisin. It's very sweet and tastes something like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry. We love adding them to smoothies, trail-mix, cereals, especially our buckola, and eating them on just their own or with cacao beans.

Nicknamed the "happy berry" for its ability to restore a person's vitality, there are more than forty different types of berries that are often referred to as goji berries..

Gubinge (Kakadu Plum)

  • Description
  • More Details

Gubinge is the Nyul Nyul language name for the Kimberley version of the Kakadu Plum which is also called the Billygoat Plum or Murunga.  The fruit has been a traditional source of bush tucker, antiseptic and a healing remedy for the Indigenous people across Arnhem Land for thousands of years. Today the trees are still in great abundance and come to fruit usually at the start of the dry season in May each year.

Gubinge has been identified as the natural source food with the highest vitamin C content on the planet containing 13g of vitamin C per 100g of fruit - over 50 times the concentration found in oranges. Our dried Gubinge has a minimum of 13% Vitamin C.

Pricing:
Gubinge (Kakadu Plum) Powder - Loving Earth - 13% Vitamin C - Wildcrafted - 50g in glass jar - $39.90
Gubinge (Kakadu Plum) Powder - Raw Planet - Organic - 13% Vitamin C - Australia - 50g $38.90
Gubinge (Kakadu Plum) Powder - Raw Planet - Organic - 13% Vitamin C - Australia - 100g $75.90

Gubinge contains phytochemicals such as gallic and ellagic acids. Gallic acid has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activities and also shows anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, anti-mutagenic and anti- bronchodilatory activities. Ellagic acid has anti-carcinogenic effects against a wide range of carcinogens.

Our Gubinge is wildharvested from the Dampier Peninsula just north of Broome. Bruno Dann (Winnawal) is bringing back to his community the ancestral traditional ways of taking care of the land and the Gubinge trees, which is helping restore the amazing bush in this region.  Loving Earth has processed the fresh fruit simply by dehydrating it at 40ºC for 16 hours and then milling it into a powder.  All the profits that we receive from the sale of this product will be sent back to the Nyul Nyul community in the Kimberleys.

Hemp Protein Powder - Chemical Free - New Zealand

  • Description
  • More Details

This is a raw hemp high protein powder suitable for vegans, vegetarians and anyone who wants to boost proteins in their diet without having to consume whey or soy proteins. This protein powder is an amazing product. With a total complete protein of approximately 45% this is the best of the of seed & nut based complete proteins.

This hemp protein powder is a lovely green in colour has a sweet, light, nutty flavour and is fine enough to add to any baking, drink, meal or product. You will not find a better quality anywhere else and this is the best price hemp protein powder available.

Absolutely perfect for your morning smoothie. It is more easily digested and tastes amazing. If you are looking for more proteins in your diet, eating hemp protein powder is a great to do it.

Why hemp protein?

Hemp contains a complete easily digestible vegetable protein with all the essential amino acids. On top of having all of the amino acids, hemp protein also is 90% digestible meaning that only 10% of the protein is passed out of the digestive tract without being digested. While this is not as high as egg, typically with a 97% digestion level, it is a lot higher than soy which typically comes in at 78% or lower. Meat and fish are around the 94% mark. Peanuts have a higher digestibility at around 95% but only 25% of the peanut is actually protein whereas our hemp protein powder is 45%.

Unlike the many refined “isolate” protein powders on the market today which are heated & processed extensively, our hemp protein powder is created by cold-pressing raw non-GMO hemp seeds to separate off some of the oil, next milling them into a fine flour-like powder at low temperatures, then mechanically sieving the powder to remove some of the fibre. The process uses no solvents, fillers or additives. It is kosher, gluten-free, vegan and raw.

The cold-press and cold-milling processes used to create this hemp protein powder make sure that valuable enzymes are protected and the many minerals, vitamins and micronutrients remain intact.

Hemp is a seed & not a nut

With hemp protein, we are able to mechanically separate some of the insoluble fibre which results in the higher protein levels. We are not adding anything, just taking away. No chemicals are used in the separation process, it is a proprietary screening process but because it is mechanical, it is far from perfect and leaves a lot of the fibre still in the product, as much as 20% of protein powder is in fact, fibre. It is also the best kind of fibre, the insoluble kind, the very same they are using wood fibres for, only the fibre in hemp protein is of an excellent quality. In our opinion, there is no better place to get fibre. There is simply no better fibre then hemp fibre.

It's gluten free

Hemp seed is 100% gluten free.

Would you like to lose fat, gain muscle and improve athletic performance?

A rich source of bioavailable protein, Hemp Protein delivers a hefty 22g per 60g serving! Taken in conjunction with a regular exercise program, it can significantly help muscle recovery and growth. And, unlike other protein powders, it naturally contains the perfect balance of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which have been shown to aid thermogenesis (fat-burning). Many people say that it is very sustaining, eating hemp protein curbs their appetite for hours, leaving them with energy to spare!

Are you a vegan or vegetarian fed up with soy?

Hemp contains all 10 essential amino acids, making it the only balanced, complete source of vegan protein. For those wanting to avoid soy products, hemp protein powder can provide a tasty, high-protein alternative in a very convenient form. Ideal for vegan athletes and growing vegan kids!

Do protein powders upset your stomach?

The greatest proportion of protein in hemp is edestin, the type most easily used by the human body. Edestin is similar to those proteins found in the human body that are pre-cursors to components such as hormones, hemoglobin, enzymes and antibodies. Edestin comprises 65% of the protein in hemp seeds, offering benefits for immunity and communication between cells. Edestin also aids digestion and is considered the backbone of our cells’ DNA. Hemp’s edestin content is the highest in the plant kingdom.

The remainder of hemp’s protein occurs in the form of albumin, which ranks close to edestin in terms of bio-availability and quick conversion to amino acids. The combination of these two types of protein in one superfood seed make hemp protein the closest match for our human protein needs and the gold standard for vegan protein.

Compare this to soy and whey protein powders, which may cause digestive disturbances leading to bloating and flatulence. Soy naturally contains substances that inhibit the enzyme trypsin, interfering with digestion, and even very low-lactose varieties of whey can still contain enough lactose to upset sensitive stomachs. Neither soy nor whey contains Edestin protein. Hemp protein powder is also a healthy source of dietary fibre, chlorophyll, and minerals including magnesium, iron, zinc and potassium. It also supplies powerful antioxidants including alpha-beta, gamma and delta-tocopherol and alpha tocotrienol.

More and more people are realizing the benefits of eating food that is “live,” raw, or unheated, so that its life-giving enzymes are still active. Our hemp protein powder is manufactured using cold-processing technology that keeps the enzymes, natural antioxidants, vitamins and minerals intact. This makes it easier for the body to recognize as “real food,” and so makes it easier to assimilate. It also contains chlorophyll, a natural detoxifier!

Hemp protein is recognized as a complete/balanced vegetarian source of amino acids; EFA’s; natural anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, fibre and chlorophyll. Our hemp protein powder is the perfect high performance vegetarian whole food and may be used in place of other protein supplements. It is easily digested (no enzyme inhibitors) and can be added into any diet.

FAQ

What is the difference between hemp flakes, hemp flour & hemp protein powder?

Hemp seeds are crushed to produce oil hemp flakes.  The hemp flakes are then ground to make hemp flour. Hemp flour is medium fine consistency. To make hemp protein powder the hemp flour is mechanically sieved to remove some of the insoluble fibre. When hemp was being classified by the New Zealand Food Safety Association, scientists testified that having hemp in people's diets would improve longevity, reduce the incidence of conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and would generally improve health, but the politicians didn't want a bar of it because they have a 'War on Drugs' to fight and they only wanted bad things to be associated with the cannabis plant (hemp is the non-drug variety of cannabis).  The politicians won out mostly!

* The only hemp seed product that we can sell for human consumption in New Zealand is hemp seed oil.

* Uncrushed hemp seed is not allowed to sold at all either for humans or animals in New Zealand. (In the USA & many other countries sale of all hemp products as human food is legal).

* However it is legal to sell crushed hemp seeds &  hemp seed meal to you to feed your animals!

This means we can sell crushed hemp seeds and hemp seed meal for animal feed only, even if it is made to human food-grade standard and would be perfectly safe (beneficial even) for you to eat. This regulation only effects the point of sale - it is legal for you to consume crushed hemp seeds & hemp seed meal.

Our hemp products are grown without chemicals on the Canterbury Plains of New Zealand.

About Hemp

Hemp has been called the perfect plant.  Hemp seed oil contains what is considered to be an ideal ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids- 3:1, perfectly matching the needs of the human body. In addition to the EFAs hemp seed provides, it is also one of the richest sources of amino acids. Along with the EFAs, these two components are responsible for keratin formation, the primary protein that gives your hair structural integrity.

Hemp is quite simply, nature's health and beauty secret - and the secret is in the seed. Hemp seed oil and extract offer many benefits useful in personal care products. The reason hemp is so effective is largely because of the essential fatty acids (EFAs) it contains. More than 75% of the EFAs in hemp seed oil are poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), known for their excellent emollient and lubricating properties.

Facts on hemp

The hulled hempseed does not contain any Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). (THC is normally stored in the fleshy parts of the plant, especially the leaves. None is contained in the seeds, flowers, or roots of the plant.)

Hemp seed can be processed, much like soy, into many nutritious foods and cosmetic ingredients. Hemp seed is far more nutritious than even soybean oil and though it contains less total protein, it is far more digestible to humans.

Hemp seed contains, on average: 25% protein, 30% carbohydrates, 15% insoluble fibre, 30% oil, the nutrients carotene, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, sulphur, calcium, iron, zinc, and the vitamins E, C, B1, B2, B3, and B6. Hemp seed also is one of the few seeds to contain Omega-6 and Omega-3 Linoleic acid, commonly found in fish and useful to the immune system.

Hemp oil has been found to be a highly nutritious, essential hair and skin aid for protection, growth and anti-aging.

Hemp has excellent healing and moisturising properties.

Because of its EFA profile, hemp seed oil instantly counteracts the effects of degreasing and dehydration, conditions that produce dry skin and hair.

In addition to improving the structural quality of the hair, hemp seed oil's high lipid content helps increase elasticity, volume, combability and shine.

Hemp is used as fibre for rope, twine, tough cloth, and paper as well as other products where wood pulp is currently used.

Hemp could help preserve natural resources. For instance, hemp used for paper would replenish itself in 90 days instead of the 20-40 years required to grow trees.

An acre of hemp can produce 4 times the amount of paper that an acre of trees can produce.

Hemp requires no herbicides or pesticides for cultivation and refertilises soil naturally making the ground useful for future crops.

History of hemp

Hemp has been in continual use by human civilization for at least 10,000 years.  The first written record of cannabis was supposedly penned by one of the early Chinese emperors around 2700 B.C.  Islamic/Arabic empires created Europe's first paper mill utilizing hemp in about 1150 A.D.  In 1563 A.D., as part of the economic and military build-up of the time (80 years war), Queen Elizabeth I orders all land owners with 60 acres or more to grow Cannabis or face a £5 fine.

For centuries the fibre of the hemp plant has been used for rope, sails and other textiles.  Early drafts of The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution were written on hemp paper.

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both farmed hemp crops – the colonists were legally bound to grow hemp as one of their crops and could use hemp to pay their taxes. During times of shortage, farmers were sent to jail for not growing hemp.

In 1941 Popular Mechanics introduced Henry Ford's new plastic car, manufactured from and fuelled by hemp (an early bio diesel variant). Hoping to break the petroleum industries' monopoly of control on his company, Ford illegally grew hemp for over a year.

The 1942 Japanese invasion of the Philippines cut off the US supply of Manila hemp, among other vital resources. The US government distributed over 400,000 pounds of hempseed to farmers in order to limit the supply gap as much as possible, subsidizing hemp cultivation during WWII. American farmers grew about a million acres as part of that program.

In New Zealand hemp businesses began to appear, in more recent times, during the early to mid 1990s. Hemp product availability has continued to grow ever since.

By 2004, a few U.S. states had again legalised production of industrial hemp and this continues to grow.  In 2005, for the first time a New Zealand hemp seed oil was available in health stores and outlets. Last year, a successful venture by two Canterbury businesses culminated, in March of 2006 with the first harvest of Hemp on a commercial scale in New Zealand. The crop was grown spray free and required very little irrigation.

Hemp seed oil is considered to be the most nutritional of all oils available. It has a plethora of medicinal, nutritional, and cosmetic uses, making it a wonderful multi-purpose ingredient. It has been used for many years medicinally, and was even used during Ming Dynasty by the Chinese under the name of Ma Zi.

Hemp seed oil provides the body with complete protein, nutrition, and with all the essential amino acids necessary for health and wellness.

Medicinal and cosmetic use

Hemp seed oil is a highly nutritious food, and contains antioxidants, protein, carotene, phytosterols, phospholipids, as well as a number of minerals including calcium, magnesium, sulfur, potassium, iron, zinc, and phosphorus. It is a source of complete protein and contains all 20 known amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids. It also contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D, and E. The green color in hemp seed oil is a result of the high level of chlorophyll which is naturally present in the seeds.

Perhaps the most valued property of hemp seed oil is its percentage of essential fatty acids, which is higher than any other plant in the world. It contains both Omega-6 and Omega-3 essential fatty acids, in a proportion of 3:1. This proportion is the recommended balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 acids, making it a simple perfect way to complete your diet.

Essential fatty acids are necessary for our health, and are responsible for the lustre in our skin, hair, eyes, transferring oxygen to every cell in our body, and even the clarity in our thought processes. They also lubricate and clear the arteries, strengthen the immune system, and help prevent viruses and other threats to our immune system. Essential fatty acids are not produced by the human body. Instead, they must be obtained from food sources

Specifically, hemp seed oil has been shown to assist with the following medical conditions:
• Eczema
• Psoriasis
• Acne
• Osteoporosis
• Menopause
• Cancer
• Multiple sclerosis
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Premenstrual symptoms
• High cholesterol
• High blood pressure
• Weight loss
• Poor circulation
• Crohn's disease
• Cardiovascular disease
• Gall stones
• Kidney degeneration
• Dry skin
• Immune deficiency
• Irregular hormone levels
• HIV virus
• Tuberculosis
• Low energy levels
• Low metabolism
• Dry skin and hair conditions

In cosmetic and body-care products, hemp seed oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, balances dry skin, fights skin inflammations, helps heal skin lesions, has antioxidants, and contains moisture balancing properties. The oil is non-greasy, readily absorbs into the pores, is an emollient, and has rejuvenating and moisturising properties for the skin. Adult users of hemp seed oil have reported softer skin, and stronger nails and hair after only a few weeks of using 1-2 tablespoons per day. The vitamins and minerals present in hemp- seed oil are easily absorbed through the skin, resulting in a more vitamin and mineral-enriched body-care product.

Usage instructions

The pleasantly nutty taste of hemp seed oil makes it easy to incorporate into your culinary recipes. In one tablespoon, you will receive 2.5 grams of Omega-3 fatty acids, 8 grams of Omega-6 fatty acids, and 2 grams of Omega-9 fatty acids - a perfect balance. No other single source oil has this ideal combination of essential fatty acids. Hemp seed oil is easily digestible in its raw state. It contains less than 10% saturated fats, and 70-80% polyunsaturated fatty acids, the highest of any vegetable oil . This is an unusually high level of the good oils, making this oil beneficial for culinary use. In culinary use, the oil will not clog arteries, as do saturated and trans fatty acids or shortenings.

This oil should not be fried, and should preferably be used cold. It may easily be added to salad dressings, pasta, vegetables, smoothies, soups, sauces, hummus, guacamole, pesto, or other foods after the heating/baking has been completed. If you must heat the oil, it may be gently heated for a short period of time.

Unlike flaxseed oil, hempseed oil can be used continuously without developing a deficiency or other imbalance of EFAs. This has been demonstrated in a clinical study, where the daily ingestion of flaxseed oil decreased the endogenous production of GLA.

Hemp seed oil may be added to any body-care or cosmetic product, including creams, lotions, facial or body oils, massage oils, shampoo, conditioner, shaving products, lip balm, soap, and any other product. In hair care products, it  increases elasticity, manageability, and shine.

Recent Canadian research has shown this oil to possibly be effective as a broad-spectrum ultraviolet skin sunscreen.

Hempseed Oil - Pure Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin - Organic - Uncertified

  • More Details

We are pleased to offer the high quality culinary hemp seed oil, created from the finest locally harvested hemp.

Hempseed oil is a miracle of nature. Its unique properties offer fantastic nutritional, health and skin-care benefits...and good taste has never been so fabulous.

Rich, nutty and delicate in flavour, this oil contains the only naturally-occurring and perfectly balanced nutritional balance of Essential Fatty Acids, Omega 6 and Omega 3. Hempseed oil is just now coming on the market and supercedes all existing oils that have been used to obtain EFAs in the past (ie flax seed oil, evening primrose oil and borage oil) - what's more, it's the first delicious edible oil to accomplish this.

Hempseed oil is cold-pressed to ensure that key nutrients, enzymes and acids are not destroyed and health benefits are maximised.

A delicious full-flavoured salad, drizzling and dipping oil, hemega3™ hempseed oil is a fresh and very healthy alternative. hempseed oil is recommended as a base for salad dressings and pasta oils and it enhances the flavour of fish, seafood, meats and vegetables.

The human body uses fatty acids from food for building tissues and for specialised functions such as the production of prostaglandins, localised tissue hormones. One major group of fatty acids is called essential fatty acids, which are polyunsaturated, and include two major groups, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. They are called “essential” because the body cannot make them and thus, must obtain them from food sources.

Hemp seed oil is the only edible seed oil to contain over 80% polyunsaturated EFA's and boasts not only the optimum ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6, but also GLA and SDA.

What is the 'optimum Omega ratio' all about?

Research data suggests that the optimum ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 for the ultimate human health ranges from 3:1 to 5:1. The World Health Organisation (Sweden/Japan) recognises this optimum ratio to be 3:1. Studies in western populations today show that a typical diet has a ratio range of 10:1 to 20:1 - see illustration >

It is likely that excess refined foods, dairy and a lack of whole foods have contributed to this lack of balance, and in turn, our failing health. Through adjusting our diet to allow more natural intake of these EFA's, we can improve our cellular health and maximise long-term vitality.

What about GLA and SDA Essential Fatty Acids?

Incorporating GLA and SDA into our diets helps our bodies assimilate fatty acids (ie the omegas). The edibility of hemp seed oil is particularly beneficial as an alternative to other GLA rich sources (ie sunflower or evening primrose oil). Adding GLA to the diet seems to lower risks of heart attacks because omega-3 fatty acids reduce the clotting tendency of the blood and improve cholesterol profiles. They also have a natural anti-inflammatory effect, making GLA and SDA useful for people with arthritis and autoimmune disorders

Health Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil

Essential fatty acids perform a major role in the human body, and we must obtain them from food sources to derive the health benefits as listed below:

Hormonal Balance

Hemp is the only edible seed containing GLA and magnesium-rich chlorophyll, both which are beneficial in helping with PMS conditions including breast tenderness, bloating, cramping and other discomforts.

Cardiovascular Tonic

Omega-3 oils have been shown in hundreds of studies to lower triglycerides and cholesterol levels - they are also effective in decreasing blood pressure, platelet stickiness and fibrinogen levels. Numerous studies have shown that the substitution of polyunsaturated fats for saturated fats can reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest and high blood cholosterol levels. Research has found that for every 1% increase in omega-3, there was a 5mm Hg decrease in systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressure. These EFA's, especially GLA, have also been found beneficial in both treating and offering protection against various cancers.

Inflammation + Allergies

Omega-3 helps produce PG3 (prostaglandin 3 series), the anti-inflammatory chemicals that work as local hormones in the human body. Numerous studies show that EFAs have positive results in the treatment of many chronic diseases including eczema, itchy skin, acne, psoriasis, lupus and ulcerative colitis.

Arthritis

Key fatty acids found in hemp seed oil provide long-term support and maintenance of arthritic conditions, including rheumatoid athritis.

Metabolism + Nerve Function

The omega-3 fatty acids help nerve cells communicate with each other, which is an essential step in maintaining good mental health. EFAs have been shown to work with oxygen and enhance electron transport, key activities in energy output within the cell as well as enhance nerve cell insulation.

Skin Health

Hemp seed oil provides EFAs necessary for maintaining health and flexible skin cell membranes as well as exerting anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

Immunity

EFAs enhance immune function, speed up the rate of immune reactions, help to re-establish population control over intestinal bacteria and improve cellular energy for removing waster materials.

Physical Performance

Omega-3 fatty acids help support the cardiovascular system during exercise and also reduce the negative effect of intense exercise on the immune system.

Lúcuma (Loo-Ku-Mah) whole fruit powder is our favourite gourmet addition to all raw sweeties! It's got a rich, creamy texture and will turn your raw food creations into gourmet heavenly delights. Lúcuma powder is really versatile and tasty, blending easily and well with ice-creams, baby food, yogurts, pies, cakes, cookies, smoothies, chocolate bars and desserts of all kinds.

Lúcuma is a nutrient dense fruit from Peru. Lúcuma's posh title is lúcuma obovata or pouteria obovata. The tree is long lived, evergreen, and belongs to the Sapotaceae family -- so it's similar to the canistel and sapote. It smells divine, and tastes like maple syrup flavoured ice-cream! In Peru, the yellowy-orange fruit pulp is added to ice-cream and is Peru's favourite flavour.

Lúcuma fruit is an excellent source of carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. It has lots of beta-carotene, niacin (B3) and iron.

This exotic Peruvian fruit is also known as the "Gold of the Incas", and is also one of the lost crops of the Incas. Peruvian culture is steeped in traditions rich in fine foods and cultural culinary delights. The Lúcuma name has been honored both spiritually and culinary since ancient times. Today, this fruit is still prominent in contemporary celebrations.

The Lúcuma tree was first seen and reported by Europeans in Ecuador in 1531. Archaeologists have found it frequently depicted on ceramics at burial sites of the indigenous people of coastal Peru. It is native and cultivated in the highlands of western Chile and Peru and possibly southeastern Ecuador where it is known to have been cultivated since ancient times. It is grown also, to a limited extent, in the Andes of eastern Bolivia and the fruit is sold in the markets of La Paz. It is most popular in central Chile, less so in Ecuador. In 1776, it was reported as planted only in the warmest parts of northern Chile. In 1912, there were a few trees growing in gardens around San José, Costa Rica where the lucmo was introduced by returning exiles in the first half of the 19th Century. In 1915, O.F. Cook collected seeds at Ollantaytambo, Peru, for the United States Department of Agriculture (S.P.I. #41332). In January of 1922, Wilson Popenoe introduced seeds from Santiago, Chile (S.P.I. #54653). There have been several attempts to grow the tree in southern Florida. It has not lived long. One specimen actually bore fruit at the Fairchild Tropical Garden, developed galls, and eventually succumbed. Lúcuma grows well in parts of Mexico and Hawaii but the fruit is not widely favoured.

Maca Powder

  • Description
  • More Details
Maca (Lepidium Peruvianum Chacon) is a Peruvian root vegetable that looks very much like a turnip or radish. It is grown in the Junin district of the peruvian andes at an altitude of between 4,100 and 4,500 m above sea level, a region of intense sunlight, winds and below freezing temperatures, where no other crops can survive.

Maca is considered to be one the best natural foods due to its excellent and scientifically tested properties.

Health benefits of Maca:
Maca contains high amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, all the essential

amino acids and it contains nearly 60 phytochemicals. The extraordinary health benefits of Maca are due to the way it promotes optimal functioning of the hypothalamus and pituitary master glands. Maca contains unique alkaloids that stimulate the master glands, which in turn improves the overall functioning of the endocrine system.

Maca was originally domesticated by the Pumpush people of Junin in Peru, a pre-incan culture, who subsisted on it as their main staple crop. Maca plant was domesticated about 2,000 years ago by the Incas; primitive cultivars of maca have been found in archaeological sites dating back as far as 1,600 B.C.

The plant is grown from seed and root maturation generally occurs within seven months. Its appearance may be described as a shrub with a low-growing, mat-like stem arrangement, small, offwhite flowers, and scalloped leaves. The root can be one of several colors (cream, cream-purple, purple or black) and is of comparable shape to a turnip or radish.

Traditionally, native medicine practitioners and herbalists have recommended maca for:

*  Treating menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and depression, as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy [HRT]

*  Stimulating and regulating the endocrine system

*   Regulating and normalizing menstrual cycles

*  Stimulating fertility in both men and women

*  Supporting the immune system

*  Increasing energy, stamina and endurance, reducing chronic fatigue

*  Enhancing libido, treating impotence

*  Revitalizing seniors, mentally and physically

We are pleased to offer gelatinised maca as well as normal maca powder.  The gelatinised maca is put through a heated extrusion process after harvest and before it is milled. During the gelatinization process, long chains of starches contained in the Maca Root powder are unfolded, increasing the digestibility degree, also known as Gelatinization Index, which, in the case of our product reaches up to a 98+% index. This process concentrates the active ingredients which means you can absorb more of the essential nutrients.

How does Maca Work?

Maca, like Ginseng, is an adaptogen and therefore adapts to your bodies metabolism and particular needs to achieve an overall sense of wellbeing and optimal functioning. Through balancing and optimizing the functioning of the hypothalamus and pituitary master glands it also balances and optimizes the functioning of the adrenal glands, the thyroid and the pancreas. Because the levels of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone are optimized this in turn helps regulate ovarian function and enables the adrenals to produce enough hormones to avoid symptoms during menopause.

Due to this overall affect of maca on the hormonal system and high level of protein it also acts as an effective whole food mucsle building agent.

Maca also remineralizes the body, due to its high mineral content, making up for the lack of minerals in modern diets and conventionally grown fruit and vegetables. Maca has such a high mineral content due to the soils and environment in which it is grown. The cooperative of indigenous maca growers who grow our maca leave the soil fallow for 5 years after each maca crop so that the soils regenerate completely with minerals.

Dosage

For the ancient Incans and modern day Peruvians, especially in the Junin district of the Andes, maca is a staple food. So you can eat as much as you like, the more you eat the more energy and overall vigour you will experience. Maca is non-toxic, has no dangerous side affects and no withdrawal symptoms. So the quantity you can take really depends on what you want to achieve. This is why we do not put Maca into capsules and why we make it available at an affordable price so that people can consume it in appropriate quantities and experience the full benefit.

To start off with we recommend 1 teaspoon (if you feel a little queazy in the stomach reduce it to 1/2 a teaspoon for several days until your body adjusts to it). Then you can build up to 25g a day or approximately 5 teaspoons.

The only warning we have is that if you have a partner and you are taking lots of maca we recommend that your partner also take maca as it is a potent aphrodisiac - if you are concerned about this then just reduce the amount you are taking.

Serving Suggestions

Maca has a distinctive malt like flavour. Some people like eating it straight as it is by the spoonful. As maca dissolves easily you can mix it into juices, smoothies and other recipes
